Reinstatement

I'm looking to get my CFI reinstated and looked in the PTS. It says I have to pass a practical test. Does this mean the oral portion is not required?

Thanks

No. The term "practical test" includes both the oral and flight portions of the PTS. In a reinstatement, it is up to the examiner what parts of the PTS he/she wises to examine. Much like a Flight Instructor conducts a Flight Review.

The answer is found in the PTS. If you look in the PTS, it will be better formatted, but here is what it says:
Renewal or Reinstatement of a Flight Instructor Certificate

14 CFR part 61, sections 61.197(a)(1) and 61.199(a), allows an individual that holds a flight instructor certificate to renew or reinstate that certificate by passing a practical test. The examiner shall develop a plan of action that includes the Areas of Operation and at least the minimum number of Tasks prescribed in the table at the beginning of each section and the runway incursion avoidance Task. The Renewal or Reinstatement of one rating on a Flight Instructor Certificate renews or reinstates all privileges existing on the certificate.

NOTE:

Providing the initial practical test was completed in a complex airplane, the renewal or reinstatement of the Flight Instructor Certificate may be performed in a non-complex airplane, at the discretion of the examiner.

Section 1:

Flight Instructor - Airplane

Single-Engine

Renewal or Reinstatement of a Flight Instructor Table: Airplane Single-Engine Category

Required Area of Operation Number of Tasks

II Task B, M, and 1 other Task
III 1
IV 1
V 1
VII 2 Takeoffs and 2 Landings
IX 1
X 1
XI 2
XIII 1
XIV 1

The Renewal or Reinstatement of one rating on a Flight Instructor Certificate renews or reinstates all privileges existing on the certificate. (14 CFR part 61, section 61.197 and section 61.199)

In short, the examiner CAN test on everything in the PTS and they MUST test on those things in the rating table for renewal / reinstatement. It is a rare examiner who will test on more than the minimum requirement, but they can if they want to. Also, you do not need to use a complex airplane and the reinstatement of your certificate using any PTS will reinstate all of your ratings.

Has anyone here done a renewal practical test? I know my initial CFI practical was a pretty tough long 6 hour day, but because I studied my rear end off, I passed the first time. I never want to do that again, so I've never let my CFI lapse. Just wondering how brutal a renewal ride would be.

A buddy of mine did his. Pretty straight forward, but cost him $400 with a DPE.

Renewals are rarely as extensive as initials. Depends on the DPE and his personal knowledge of you.
I use to alternate between a weekend refresher course (back before online renewals ) and flying with the local DPE.
That way, we could stay on the same page together.

Was more like a BFR (before BFRs existed)

I was fortunate to get mine reinstated by an FAA inspector. I say that because there is no fee through the FSDO, the guy had a lot of experience and even taught me a few things no previous instructor I ever had mention to me. All together it was a very fun check ride just be confident and you'll do fine.

How do you schedule an FAA inspector vs. a DPE, through the FSDO directly ? I'm looking to get my CFI reinstated too... And if can put the $400 DPE fee in a few hours of practice in the airplane then that's pretty cool...

Since it hasn't been mentioned, you can also obtain another CFI rating to renew your instructor's certificate (CFI-I, MEI, CFI-G, etc)
