Recreational flying near NYC? Long Island or Jersey FBO?

So it's looking like I'm going to be moving from Tampa, FL to Brooklyn, NYC in the near future and looking at the charts I see a very crowded airspace. So it looks like Long Island or Jersey are my best options for flying. Does anyone here live in New York City and fly recreationally? It looks like KFRG is my best option but I want to see what others think.

Yeah from brooklyn your best options are on long island.

I'm a member of westchester flying club. Its great for those of us in manhattan. We have two archers, 2 arrows and 3 bonanza/debonairs.

There are plenty of membership slot available.

KFRG is my home airport. There are a lot of schools/flying clubs to rent a plane from on the field. It can get a little busy when the weekend warriors come out to fly but for the most part it is very easy to get in and out.

Check this site out for places to rent from http://www.republicairport.net/flight-training.htm

As for the recreation, there are plenty of places to the north for a $100 hamburger, you can impress your special lady friend by flying her east to the hamptons or marthas vineyard, or you can try out your spin recoveries to the south over a vast open ocean. There's no point in heading west unless you want to do a city tour.

There are a few other airports on the island worth checking out such as KISP and KHWV, but FRG is the closest to brooklyn.

Figured I'd give a shout out to my airport, Alexandria. Lot's of guys from east NJ/NY. Could be a little farther than Farmingdale but it's only 1 hr and a world away from NYC. There's others closer to the city in NJ you might check out (central jersey regional, solberg). Long Island is for the birds.

KFRG? How does renting a C150 for 120 wet sound? Brookhaven might have more affordable rates. I rent out of N51, Solberg Hunterdon Airport in Central NJ. They Have 152's for 79.99 an hour and skyhawks for 99.99 an hour. I come all the way from Linden, which about 40 minute drive. Figure, it would be like 1:30 from Brooklyn. I searched all over for the best rates, and I think Solberg is the best deal.

Thanks for the heads up all, this helps a lot. I'm going to have to jump in a car and see if NJ is doable and get a closer look at KFRG so I can make a decision.
