Ramper Job

Well its about summer and Im looking at getting a job down at Montgomery Regional airport as a ramper for ASA/Delta Connection or USAirwaysExpress. I was wondering if anyone here has worked the ramp and what you thought? I know it is a hot, labor filled job but I figured with part time shifts of only 4 hours, I will be outside, able to interact with pilots, work around planes which i love, and most importantly FREE TRAVEL BENEFITS which as a 22 year old with a free summer..this should rock visiting various places for fun. They are offering 9 bucks an hour starting too which beats the hell out of any job I can get at Auburn part time. Anyhow any insight appreciated!

I have been searching tirelessy for a ramping job for this summer as well. I live by O'Hare and Midway airports, so there should be an abdundance of jobs available, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've applied to: Continental
American/ American Eagle
Southwest
Delta/Delta Connection
US Airways

I am well aware I have about the same chance of landing one of these jobs as the Cubs winning a world series though...

Have fun this summer, that job should be a blast.

wow..why is it so hard up there to get a ramper job?? because of the size of Chicago?

The head guy at ASA was really excited i wanted to apply..he is having trouble finding people to hire...probably b/c our airport is very small (definitely an RJ airport)

FWS

WN is hiring in MDW right now, so I would suspect you'd be getting a call. Of all the companies you listed, SWA is the one you'd be luckiest to work for.

I have been to Dannelly Field in 95/96 boring airport. When I was there they only had one mainline plane service the airport and it was a Delta 88. They have jetways yet?

Thanks for the info. I figured I would apply for the heck of it and thought it was a total shot in the dark. I'm not sure if it was Southwest but some even needed resumes. I've had one legitimate (and short lived) job so far so I have no credentials at all. My resume totally sucks, I'm worried I won't have much of a chance. I couldn't think of a cooler job to have over the summer for an aviation nut, I REALLY hope I land one.

Not sure what you mean. Did you apply online??? If not do so!

So you have almost no job history as you are a student? Play up you associations & extra curricular activities. When I got hired I had only two previous jobs, although at the time I was employed (retail) when I was hired. They like young, fresh enthusiasm.

I used to work for Delta Shuttle at Logan (Boston). It was a blast! Don't get me wrong though it's tough work, and I nearly got sucked in by an engine (had earplugs and a whole bunch of other protective stuff on, I couldn't hear the engine starting up). But overall it has got to be the funnest job I have ever had. In between flights you could just watch movies, or play poker, or whatever. One tip, bring kneepads. The 737's don't have that much headroom in the bins so your gonna be kneeling most of the time, and after a few flight they're gonna hurt. I guarantee you in a month you're going to have sooooo many stories to tell your friends. Trust me I have more close calls, baggage, US Mail, gate not ready for plane, drag racing in tugs stories than I can count.

Congrats on the job.

Not that I know of. I was with Delta for a while before the company I was working for lost the contract. Let's just say one of my fellow ramp workers caused, around $250,000 in damages to a plane. They say this wasn't why we lost the contract, but i'm pretty sure it had an impact.

Sounds like USAFplt got a ramp job just for this summer, but I'm not sure. That would suck if couldn't get the job because I would only be there for the summer.

Ummmmm just don't tell them that your only working there for the summer.
If you do that and they have another guy who has career aspirations who do you think there gonna hire?
When the summer is over just turn in your resignation.

Doesn't it look bad on your resume if you stick with a job for a small period?

Exactly what i'm doing..i'm commissioning as a 2nd LT in the USAF and headed to pilot training in August when I graduate so I could really care less if they get pissed when i leave after the summer. It is only part time help anyhow. I"m really pumped up about the job though..its goign to the a blast being around the planes and pilots etc.

Oh yeah..we do have 5 gates now at Dannelly...the airport is all redone..pretty nice for the size!

Naw, employers understand that students take jobs just for the summer.

SWA is hands down the best company I've worked for. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I weren't chasing this whole pilot thing. In fact, I'd love to retire from SWA as a 737 Capt. If you can get on with them, do it. However, they do not hire part-time (at least they didn't in MCO) and they do not hire for the summer. They're looking for people that want to make SWA a career. The job itself is alternatingly fun and exhausting with times of boredom. During weather situations, there's not a whole lot to do except watch the lightning storms. For the most part, I had a lot of fun, but I also worked my butt off. As far as interaction with pilots, don't take the job for that. There's not a whole lot of it since your normally buried in the belly of a metal beast while they sip coffee and program the FMS. If you want to interact with pilots, you'll have to go out and find them on your downtime. It can be done (I manged to make a few connections), but it's not easy.

That sucks, I really like Southwest, but I'm sure loading planes is loading planes, any airline will do. I want this job to get in shape, make money for PPL training, and be around planes. I'm definitely up for the chellenge. The question is will I get a ramp job? Probably not, but hey, it's worth a try.

I suggest you try to find an FBO job at local airports if you cant get the ramper job. I have a lot of friends that do it and its a lot of fun as well
