Ramp Workers

It's cold in the Mid West. It's times like these that they deserve some credit. As a former line guy I had my fair share of bad weather, but I never had to work in conditions like they're facing. Someone still needs to hump the bags, dump the lav, put fuel into it, Marshall it in and out and deice it. If you get a chance you might make an effort to acknowledge their efforts to keep stuff running in difficult conditions. Just a thought.

I spent a few years doing ramp work, and can understand and totally appreciate what they go through to keep things running. I don't believe they make gloves think enough to insulate your hand from a 100LL nozzle when the fuel running through it is -40°.

Do whatever you like, just let them know you appreciate their suffering on your behalf. It's normally a rough job but this week has been unusually cold.

leftover netjets box lunches sustained me during college and flight training.
The Kirkland Signature flight department was catered with Costco food, I once got an entire chocolate cake from them
I once ate James Hetfields untouched catered Dennys club sandwich plate. It was during the Black Album tour and they were chartering a G-I. Why they ordered Dennys for catering I have no idea. They actually hung out for a few minutes so they could stretch their legs a bit before they jumped in the cars and left. Seemed like nice people.

Celebrities are weird. My dad did a Knicks charter a few years ago to London and he thought he was going to get a really nice meal because of good catering. The players catered PB&J sandwiches and fried chicken.

Strangely enough I came across this today. PB&J seems to be popular with athletes.

When I was a line guy, my favorite question I ever got from a charter pilot was, "If we leave our pallet of bottled water in the plane overnight, will it freeze?" It was -15F (and getting colder) and the plane was sitting out overnight without a heat cart. The guy must've been from somewhere warm!

Had a captain curse about lazy rampers when it was 15 degrees snowing at ORD one night recently. I asked him "How would you like it out there right now?". He didn't have much to say after that.....The way pilots refer to and rant about "lower class workers" sometimes can be pretty infuriating.....relax. we're blue collar workers who wear white shirts.
