R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

So....now I've got my spin endorsement!

All I gotta say is - HOTDIGGITYDAMN that was COOL!!!

Took the C150 and with my CFI (150 lbs), me (220 lbs.), full fuel, and a late June day, we had a whoppin 300-400 fpm climb rate.

Flew south along the coast to the mouth of Tampa Bay just into the Gulf and commenced a 10-15 minute climb up to 5000'.

First on the agenda was Power-Off spin to the left.

I was NOT ready for THAT!!!

That sumbiotch nosed over FAST (not like a 172) and all I saw was COLORS - spinning, spinning colors!

My instructor QUICKLY brought me back to reality with "Close Throttle. Opposite rudder. Forward pressure." VERY calmly.

I followed his instructions and VIOLA! We came out of it....after about 2.5 rotations!

Climbed back up to 5000' and did another one to the left. This time, I focused and REALLY enjoyed the scenery.

I did the talking this time and just calmly said "Power back. Opposite rudder. Forward pressure."

CHILDS PLAY!

Did three more to the right - all power off and then the last one, we did a power-on to the right.

My CFI asked if he could do one himself and I obliged and just enjoyed the ride.

I'm tellin' you folks - when/if you do spin training - DO MORE THAN ONE! After that first one, I was in no shape, form, or fashion acclumated to .... anything!!

We did seven in all and after about number 2 or 3, I actually began to feel somewhat "comfortable" with them.

I dug it! Hopefully, you will too!!

You goin with Rolf Riddle_Pilot?

Tell everyone at North-Aire I said hi, and I had to buy reading glasses for the GOM here at Mesa...HA!

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

I did my spin endorsement in a Great Lakes open cockpit byplane... good times. It was the first time in my life that I thought I was going to be sick. Good times! Although it was a shot to my ego having my 75 year old instructor kick my 23 year old ass with an airplane... but definitely an experience

Spins are fun. You did 7 turn spins, or 7 of the 2.5 turn spins?

7 turns is about right to get the feel, if you are going to be a CFI I think. After a few turns, it is fully developed, and you can play with controls a bit, watch how things change, go back, and do a normal recovery.

It really helps to get something better than a 150 to do it in though, as you stated, it takes a lot of climbing to get up to a safe alt. I did a few days of spinning in a 7KCAB, couple days with an instructor, and one day out on my own. Had a blast. My hope is to be able to find a nice Citabria myself to use for the same purpose to train others now that I'm a CFI.

I'd strongly recommend simulating over and over, how students will accidentally get you into a spin, and what happens with how they normally try and recover as though it were a stall (adding power, not reducing it) and what happens as they try and use ailerons to recover). Relax some of the back pressure, and let it accelerate, slow it back up, and recover. Get the feel of it. Remember, this is not just training for you to do a spin or two, but you are being signed off saying you are competent in intruction realated to spins.

7 2.5 turn spins.

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

Now head out and get some spin time in an aerobatic airplane. I found that spinning a 150 or 172 to be a pretty tame affair. The 150 is certainly a bit sporty compared to a 172, but its 500% tamer than something that really wants to spin.

If you ever have the opportunity, try it in a Pitts for some real fun!

I have heard that! Only been in a Zlin and a Decathlon myself.

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

I just was working on spins and spirals this weekend, and let me tell you I am not someone who is info roller coasters or spinning around and I was freaked out when I started. Now that I practiced I am a little more comfortable

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

I'm right there with you, man. I love roller coasters, but roller coasters don't go 5000' AGL.

I was a bit apprehensive yesterday before my lesson...and I experienced a whole range of feelings - from apprehention, to resignation, to just plain fear, to understanding.... and finally to enjoyment.

The key is to know that you can respond and recover should a student put you in a spin. According to my instructor last night - it will happen.

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

Anyone know where I can take a fun spin ride like you guys?? My 35th birthday is coming up (too dang quickly) and it'd be fun to do something a bit more "thrilling" than a roller coaster at Koaster Kingdom...

Or do I have to become a pilot first? hahahaha

is 5000' AGL a minimum safe altitude in order to get over the "colors" and back into reality in time to power back on? or can you go higher/lower? sorry bout the "dumb" question.. aerobatics has always been intriguing!

Re: R2F\'s Seven (not so) Deadly Spins

TPF here in Tampa. Next time you're down visiting the Fam., drop me a line and I'll hook you up with my instructor.

Hell, I may even PAY for it!
