quick question about geo-prefs

Are my Geo-prefs "locked in" for Pubnat 7? Is there any way to change them? After I take the AT-SAT will I get an email asking me to confirm my geo prefs? Can I call someone? If the answer is no...I totally screwed up and wasted a pubnat.

I picked two small states (ME and VT) that only have a max of level 7 terminal options. When I filled out the application I thought I wanted a smaller town tower but I didn't know how much less those guys make. If I do this career change I think I want an enroute job in NH (I'm a regional pilot now with a comfortable amount of seniority) . This will make the decision easy for me, as the decision gets easier when you add the financial aspect to the QOL aspect. Supporting a family on 90k/yr is a lot different than 60k/yr.

Also, just a thought, since I chose two small states that surround the state I really want is there anyway that will help my case?

Thanks for the help...and good luck to all the pubnat 7 guys with the At-Sat!

The short answer is no, you're not locked in yet.

The long answer is. . .relax. This is going to be a looooooong process. After you take the ATSAT, you'll get an email asking about your geographic preferences. Then you'll be locked in. They completely disregard whatever you put down on your original application, and in fact, I think they instruct you to put down "Throughout the United States" anyway. Hope that answers your question. If not, I would browse through this forum a little more because almost any question you can come up with about the process has probably already been asked and answered. Good Luck.

You actually haven't even done your Geo Prefs yet. The area you fill out during the application process doesn't even get looked at. Sometime in the future you'll get an email requesting your Geo Prefs. Who knows when this may come. When it does come you get to choose only two states. You can change them up until the due date, whatever that happens to be. Once that day passes your picks are locked in.

Thanks guys for quick answer...now I can concentrate 100% on procrastinating AT-SAT prep.
In my opinion, the preparation is overrated. (and much debated here)

Brush up on doing D=RT math in your head, angles, and reading the gauges on an instrument panel (fuel, altimiter, VSI, oil pressure, etc.)

Other than that you can't really prepare for the AT-SAT

Yeah, i would just relax and enjoy the app process.....As I told my wife, it was like this:

1. I applied, and the forgot I applied, then all of a sudden I'm taking this test I don't know much about.
2. Got my test results then forgot about them, then was selected at panels to go to PEPC
3. then its all rushed to go to the PEPC....I think there giving us like 1 month notice
4. depending on your route (terminial vs. enroute) you could be in OKC any where from 4-9 months after the PEPC (at least from what I have seen on peeps signature.

Good luck to you guys!

That is pretty much what happened to me. I applied, and then it had been song long I just figured nothing came of it. Then months later out of the blue I get an email saying I was selected for the test. Figured cool, might as well give it a shot. I finally started paying attention to the whole process once I found out I scored Well Qualified. I actually didn't even want to check ASAP to see my score because I thought I did bad, but my wife made me.

They are thinking about changing the application process so that you

1. Will only apply once per year and will be considered for all panels during that year

2. Will select your geo-prefs at your initial application and they will not change throughout the entire year. You will no longer get geo-pref emails

This hasn't happened yet, so we'll find out

I thought that was already in place for any future PUBNATS? There was the thing on the main page of ASAP saying they changed the application so you pick your Geo Prefs then, and they actually count.

There have not been any new PUBNATs since that change was made
Well I know that....you said that it was a change they were thinking of making. The change has already been made, it just hasn't been used yet due to a lack of a new PUBNAT.

I know this has been discussed before, but is there any word on if it will ever be used again? (another pubnat?)

This is also a question that I know can not be directly axswered, but what are the chances of getting a facility at your Geo pref?

I saw Tokyo, Japan as one of the geo preferences in the PUBNAT 7 application. It was one of my choices. Is that really a legitimate option? Having been there several times I would really like to live there for a period of my life. Anyone have insight on this?

The geo prefs you filled out on your initial application for pubnats 1-7 will not count as official geo prefs.

yea but my question is, is Tokyo, Japan really an option for ATCers? (FAA) Like I said, I saw it on PUBNAT 7 so it made me wonder if they staff Narita approach with FAA controllers or not.

No it's not. The only out of country facilities I know of are Guam, and San Juan Puerto Rico.

The FAA uses the same form for every application. Those country options may apply to other jobs, but not ATC.

If you score WQ, your chances of getting selected at about 50/50.

Make sure you put that you are willing to work anywhere in your comments section. This might increase your chances.

Im not familiar with many of these terms.. what does "WQ" mean? Work Qualified?
Well Qualified. It's based on the score you get on the AT SAT. Above 85 is WQ. Below 85 but above 70 is Qualified or "Q". Below 70 is not passing and cannot be considered for employment.
