Questions Regarding Hiring Minimums

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions regarding hiring minimums. I will give the example with Continental's requirements:

[ QUOTE ]

1,500 hours fixed-wing total flight time
1,000 hours fixed-wing PIC time, or 500 hours PIC time and 500 hours SIC time in a turbojet
1,000 hours fixed-wing turbine time
1,000 hours fixed-wing multi-engine time (civilian or military) or 1,000 hours single-engine military fighter jet time
A current ATP written exam
A current first class FAA medical
A current passport
A Bachelor's degree is highly desired

[/ QUOTE ] 1) Is the total flight time required for hire 1,500 hours? I am pretty sure it is since it says "total," but with all the "1,000" requirements below it, it does not add up to 1,500.

2) Relating to question #1, I am assuming that all these requirements can be combined together, such as flying PIC in a multi-engine aircraft. Perhaps I should not even ask that question.

3) What is turbine time? What type of aircraft does this include?

Thanks in advance.

Total time is exactly that, the total time you have in airplanes of any description as a required crewmember.

In this case they only want fixed wing airplane time, helicopter time dosen't count.

Turbine time refers ot turboprop or jet.

You can't just add up all those 1,000 hour requirements. You could have been PIC in a King Air for 1,000 hours right after getting your commercial license and meet every one of those requirements except the total time. Unlikely I know.

Read it kinda like this....

[ QUOTE ]
1,500 hours fixed-wing total flight time

[/ QUOTE ]

of which must include

(a)
[ QUOTE ]
1,000 hours fixed-wing PIC time, or 500 hours PIC time and 500 hours SIC time in a turbojet

[/ QUOTE ]
(b)
[ QUOTE ]
1,000 hours fixed-wing turbine time

[/ QUOTE ]
(c)
[ QUOTE ]

1,000 hours fixed-wing multi-engine time (civilian or military) or 1,000 hours single-engine military fighter jet time

[/ QUOTE ]

So, the odds of someone ONLY having 1500TT and those reqs is pretty damn slim. Now, if someone happened upon a fixed wing turbine job with 500 TT, then it could happen.

Considering the rate United's hiring, it might as well stay there. Probably cost too much to change them.....

Yeah. I just remember back in college researching United and seeing that. Is it their mins? Sure. Competitive? Well, you and I know that's another story altogether. Although if I remember right, I think Doug knew of someone that was hired with those mins, or a little above them. We'd heard about it just after school.

The Low total time required is for the military pilots (especially fighter pilots) who may only have 1500-2000 hours of flight time after an eight year commitment. It is safe to say competitive mins for those with civilian backgrounds only will be much higher.
