Question for you CFI\'s

If you don't teach at a pilot center that has its own program such as Cessna, what do you use for lesson plans for the flight lesson for private, instr., comm., etc. Is there a standard book put out by someone that most CFI's use?

Re: Question for you CFI\'s

My first school I worked with was a part 61 operation all the way. We, as instructors, decided what to cover for lessons.

I used my old Jeppesen syllabi from my training for my lessons. I recommended to my student to get the Jepp books for self study also. Good Books!

I think most of us would recommend what we used ourselves, because we are familiar with them.

Re: Question for you CFI\'s

Is there a standard book though that is generally accepted as the best to use for this, such as an ASA book or Jepessen or something that actually has lesson plans for each flight lesson?

Yes, mine are the best, in total modesty...

Every CFI uses his own self-created program!

No kidding, man. I think I have enough lesson plans to publish my own course by now.....

Either way, the answer is Whatever you want to. You can create your own or you can use the Cessna, Jepp, ASE, Gleim, King, etc ones that are already out there. Borrow a few and you'll find that they are all pretty much the same. All of them teach basic flight before steep turns and none of them teach touch and goes for instructor currency on the second lesson.

My philosophy is simple. I can use the syllabus and lesson plans that some company paid a bunch of money an collective instructor experience to research and create or I can re-create the wheel. For the syllabus, I don't see a reason to and use a slightly modified Cessna syllabus I got hold of some years back. Changes a few things and reformatted it a bit to use as a record. For lesson plans, I look at what's there to get ideas, but tend to go my own way in practice and write a few self-reminder outlines of things to be sure to cover.

BTW, with apologies for pop-ups (not my regular site) there's a copy of the private pilot syllabus I use here: http://midlifeflight.tripod.com/cfi_stuff/index.htm
