Private Pilots License

Does anyone out there know who what one can do with a private pilots license? I am speaking in terms of if you get your PPL and have to wait a while before you do anymore training. Are you able to do anything else related to flying or do you have to wait until you get your commercial license? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

With the PPL you can do anything you want! Just stay outta the clouds and don't fly anyone or anything for hire! :)

I think one of the greatest joys about flying is taking your friends and loved ones up with you. They usually are impressed and its a great feeling of accomplishment.

I remember when I took up my dad and sister flying when I first got my license. It was an awesome feeling! I flew them down the lake shore of Chicago and gave them a tour of the skyline. It was definetly a memorable flight. Actually my avatar is a picture from the flight as I was turing back around northbound just south of the city.

It's a great time...you can have a lot of fun with your license. Go out and see the country!

yep. if you dont have your commercial, the most you can accept is an amount equal to but not more than what you pay for airport expecnces, rental or any other fligt related thing. you cant make money from flying with your ppl

Build some good cross-country time for your instrument rating if you wish to get one; fly friends/family around for fun or trips; explore new and fun airports; try out some new airplanes; get a high-performance, complex, or tailwheel endorsement (although this does require some training, but minor compared to a certificate or rating); you could even finish some of the requirements for a commerical license such as the solo cross-country, solo night requirements, etc. etc. Other than being paid or compensated and flying in the clouds, the sky is the limit with a PPL.

No. You have to have your commercial pilot =certificate= before you can get paid.

That's not just semantics. As you'll unfortunately come to learn, the difference between a "certificate" a "rating" and an "endorsement" leads to almost constant arguments about what pilots can do and what they are allowed to write in their logbooks.

It's also not completely true that once you get your commercial pilot certificate you can get paid. You can, but there are a lot of restrictions on the types of operations you can be paid for.

If you just got the private certificate, you have some additional aeronautical experience to build before you'll be eligible for the commercial. You can look up the specifics in part 61. Start flying lots of xc flights with at least one leg over 50 NM. Go to places you haven't been before, and use different methods of navigation to get there -- VOR hopping, pilotage, etc. Use flight following, so you can get used to talking to ATC (I'm assuming you'll also be going for an instrument rating). Fly into towered airports and class B airspace to get used to talking on the radio. Do some flying at night. Take an instructor along (he can file IFR if necessary) and do stuff like fly in rain and MVFR. Practice bumpy crosswind landings.

And you can study when you're not flying. You can do a lot on your own to prepare for later ratings. And have fun -- don't be all type A like me.

*Just dont tell anyone and keep it hush hush. You will be golden. And for the clouds, go for it. You will bust out sooner or later.
