Obama is flying in to thank the firefighters who're still trying to keep Colorado Springs from burning down- and who will still be doing so during the visit. No word so far on whether the Tanker aircraft will be grounded during the publicity stun-errrr, I mean during the Presidential Visit to Thank the Firefighters.

From the NOTAM: "D. This NOTAM does not restrict any aircraft actively participating in the firefighting efforts for the Waldo Canyon Fire."

Looks pretty cut and dry to me.

These TFRs generally don't apply to the above, or in the case of a major airport being affected, it doesn't normally affect standard IFR traffic into and out of the primary field (it will state as such in the NOTAM). Also, air ambulance, law enforcement flights, etc, are unaffected.

In this case, normal IFR traffic is not permitted, and Air Ambulance must be approved by calling a number before the flight, and then you are stuck, no return flight.

"Unaffected" is a bit disingenuous, especially when it comes to the air ambulance, LE, or any VFR on a sanctioned mission. They generally allow such things but require far more communication/coordination than normal.

This is coming from someone that works a permanent "TFR" and deals with 2+ additional ones per month.

I hate security theater, I am of the firm opinion that the large majority of it is a severe detriment to flight safety.

I would have to disagree. The other day, Obama flew into KATL and the airport was shut down for departures and arrivals for close to 40 minutes. I don't know if it was just north flow shut down, but we had to sit on the ramp until he was 15-20 minutes away, landed, taxied, parked, deplaned, and was driving away before we were released for departure.

That's not what you claimed, but, OK...

Care to name any Bush supporters from this board who didn't care about presidential TFR's?

That's why if you guys read where I specifically wrote "generally" don't apply to XXX, etc, you'll see that even Im wary about how they're created and executed. The biggest problem is that each TFR is different, there's no real standard between them (unlike, for example, firefighting TFRs); which to me is a huge potential problem and a violation waiting to happen for a pilot, not to mention when they become a "moving TFR" and there's little way to disseminate the info on that in a timely manner. The other problem I noticed as one who has had to enforce these TFRs by air myself, is that the sheer size of them is too much. If the TFR is for PHX and centered on KPHX, for example; a guy shouldn't have to get intercepted because he flew 10 miles or so northeast of KFFZ, enroute TO KFFZ; all because the TFR is so huge in horizontal dimension. It makes no sense.

Im all for security with regards to Presidential movements, but it has to be tempered with just how greatly it affects (or not) daily life thats going on in the area.

I didn't really care about TFRs when Bush was in office, and I'm not even a Bush supporter. I actually just thought it was cool to see Air Force One. But then again, I was $100 hamburger flying, so no skin off my back.
