Sounds like a Martinaire 208. The track is a very perplexing one.

Confirmed fatal. RIP Capt.

The pilot of a cargo plane was killed in a crash Monday after taking off from Victoria, according to the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office.

According to preliminary information, the pilot was the only person on board at the time of the crash just north of Benbow Road, which is roughly 9 miles from the Victoria Regional Airport.

I flew it a lot too. It was one of the 2 aircraft that had KFC-250 autopilots with yaw dampers. Reportedly investigators found the inverter switch in the OFF position, which means the autopilot wouldn’t be powered. I’m hoping this accident wasn’t:
  1. Forget to turn inverter on as most 208s don’t have a separate inverter switch
  2. Forget to do checklist to verify AP operation
  3. Take off and hit AP on switch
  4. Stop monitoring instruments since AP is flying
  5. CFIT
When I was at Martinaire they did provide training on the inverter airplanes during initial at least. I liked those two airplanes the best because of the yaw dampers. RIP.

Did it still have the standard KI256 vacuum attitude? On the 250 autopilot is the HSI powered off the inverter or via DC?

It’s been so long I cannot remember. I do remember that this and N4591B were fitted out for DHL as cat 2 airplanes, although that never went anywhere. If I recall I think the attitude indicator was larger than the normal KI256 and it might have been electrically powered now that you mention it... but I am not 100% on that.

Gotcha, I’d never heard of a 250 before so I just pulled the King pamphlet, it kinda looked like the big attitude indicator might be AC powered which would go a long way toward explaining this.

Yeah, you’re right. Looking at this pamphlet we had everything but the altitude preselector.

I think this is the way I remember it too.

No flag on the ADI, just the HSI?

So this and one other bird in the fleet are configured this way? Was it or the pilot not normally assigned to this run?

If I remember correctly there was a small flag, and the FD bars would not come down. But (and again this is memory) I believe the attitude indicator would cage at straight and level on the ground. I’ll have to dig through my external HD and see if I have any pics.
Those two birds stayed in Texas since they were kind of oddballs, mostly doing routes in and out of DFW. Like Spira, I enjoyed flying them and frequently used them for training new hires.

For what it’s worth the copilot side still had the standard six pack.

I think I did either training, and/or my checkride in one of those two back in 2014.
