And apparently, all that happened to the pilot was a broken leg. Lucky fella.

more ammo for the "close SMO" crowd though.
Well, it might suck if you're IFR in a Jeeeeetttttttttttt (much like Teterboro, Republic, White Plains...)...
My point exactly....should have clarified ;-)
I still think SMO has it's place, VFR or IFR. It is still a perfect gateway to the westside for GA. I hope the airport never closes. In no way do I mean to offend anyone, but honestly....
As a charter pilot that flies in and out of SMO on a regular basis, I think the airport has run it's course. It is a very inefficient operation, by no fault of their own. Having sat 30+ min while waiting for Socal to release us for departure on a CAVU day just gets old after the 20th time. I don't blame them! Coordinating LAX and BUR/VNY departures/arrivals around SMO has got to be hell.
Not to mention the short runway, ridiculous landing fees, a crappy IAP, and the noise sensitive area....
Anyway, sorry to thread drift...glad the guy is OK.
Some residents want the airport to be shut down for their safety. They say the runway's edge is only 300 feet from their homes.

Dumbs***s should have thought about that before they bought a house off the end of a runway...
I want the houses leveled all the way to the Ocean for MY safety.
The plane was a Cessna 172 that belonged to Justice Aviation, a flight school that has been based at Santa Monica Airport for the last 20 years.
Joe Justice, the owner of the school, confirmed that the plane belonged to the company, but had no further comment pending the results of investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
From the news report
I think the one out of Justice earlier this year was an Arrow, that did an emergency landing at a landfill in the agoura hills practice area. Do you know the cause?
Was there another accident involving a cherokee or are we thinking of the same one?
I personally know the instructor. I did his instrument rating, about half of his commercial, and some of his CFI. Piper PA28-200 Cherokee Arrow, right? To me, it's still a Cherokee.
