And apparently, all that happened to the pilot was a broken leg. Lucky fella.

In no way do I mean to offend anyone, but honestly....

As a charter pilot that flies in and out of SMO on a regular basis, I think the airport has run it's course. It is a very inefficient operation, by no fault of their own. Having sat 30+ min while waiting for Socal to release us for departure on a CAVU day just gets old after the 20th time. I don't blame them! Coordinating LAX and BUR/VNY departures/arrivals around SMO has got to be hell.

Not to mention the short runway, ridiculous landing fees, a crappy IAP, and the noise sensitive area....

Anyway, sorry to thread drift...glad the guy is OK.

I still think SMO has it's place, VFR or IFR. It is still a perfect gateway to the westside for GA. I hope the airport never closes.

Tonight's news showed cell phone video footage of pilot being dragged out of wreckage. He appeared covered with avgas and dirt. He was crying out that he is in pain and passerbys were dousing him with water from a hose. Otherwise looked unharmed although there are reports on leg and ankle injuries. A helicopter pilot in the area reported the pilot reported trouble after departure and was returning to land. The pilot made a go around and crashed on his 2nd attempt to land. It's unclear to me if ATC told the pilot to go around or he decided this on his own. The newsman made it sound like it could have been ATC.

-break-

What is this world coming to...a pilot advocating closure of an airport. It's happening fast enough, they don't need our help.

The plane was a Cessna 172 that belonged to Justice Aviation, a flight school that has been based at Santa Monica Airport for the last 20 years.
Joe Justice, the owner of the school, confirmed that the plane belonged to the company, but had no further comment pending the results of investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

From the news report

"Some residents want the airport to be shut down for their safety. They say the runway's edge is only 300 feet from their homes."

Dumb should have thought about that before they bought a house off the end of a runway...

I want the houses leveled all the way to the Ocean for MY safety.

This is awesome:

Some residents want the airport to be shut down for their safety. They say the runway's edge is only 300 feet from their homes.

Uhhh, you bought a house 300 feet from a pre-existing airport? BAH! Unless, of course, we've been razing neighborhoods to put in airports recently! ;)

We had a Carrier Landing Practice Field (NOLF Coupeville) just outside of NAS Whidbey, been there since the 1940's. They started building McMansions near it in the early 1990's then immediately started complaining to the Base that the A-6's were too loud. WTF, didn't you see them there flying 6 hours a day when you picked out your house lot?

Well thats not good. Thats the second accident for them this year. 1st one was a Cherokee. I know the instructor in the one earlier this year. Thankfully, both occupants were unharmed, and the NTSB ruled the accident as mechanical.

I think the one out of Justice earlier this year was an Arrow, that did an emergency landing at a landfill in the agoura hills practice area. Do you know the cause?
Was there another accident involving a cherokee or are we thinking of the same one?

I personally know the instructor. I did his instrument rating, about half of his commercial, and some of his CFI. Piper PA28-200 Cherokee Arrow, right? To me, it's still a Cherokee.

Fair enough.
Yeah, I know the instructor involved in the Arrow accident. Luckily, no one was injured in that one!

they're all cherokee's to me too.

tangent- why is it Piper drivers are the worst on correcting the type? God forbid you call a Meridian a Malibu, you'd think it was a capital offense.
