PLan b

Im serious. Going back to school would only be a short term option since it doesnt pay money, so i really dont know.

Yeah I've been thinking hard about it too. Just bought a house in Raleigh, love having my own place, don't wanna move.

Going to another feeder isn't really on the table unless I'm down to my last pennies. I was seriously contemplating being a cop. I've got family and friends in the legal field, I'm also thinking about going to the local CC and learning the paralegal/lawyer field, or some sort of engineering field.

But you're right, I just can't rush into it, 'cause I got bills to pay too. ####.

I used to teach, and I still substitute on days when I'm not flying. Even though I have the degree, most states only require 'some' college (and a clean background) and most are desperate for subs...it usually will net $15-20/hr...not bad for glorified babysitting from 8-3.

I'd seriously go back to school and work on my masters in school counseling I believe. Not that it would pay great however it would pay alright and I'd get the benefits. Either that or work on an MSW or something like that. I've really been keeping the options open though as to what I will do when and IF. I dont think I'd want to go instruct. As much as I loved it I think the next move would be further my education while part time instruction.

I was seriously contemplating being a cop.

Start running:)... the academies are no joke when it comes to PT. The one I attended had Marines just coming back from OIF and they were surprised at the amount we PT'd. Of course our Sergeant and RTO's were all former USMC, so that didn't help. Have you thought about getting involved with a reserve unit so you can test the waters?

As for the original question - I'd go back to 91/135 work or try the law enforcement thing again, as much as I'd rather not. If everything fell apart, I would attempt to attend law school and get a job at a DA's/US Attorney's office... going from one end of the stability spectrum (airlines) to the cushy other end (Gov't jobs).

I'm not at an airline, but I'd go back to instructing if I lost my job today. I have 250hrs beech turbine time would try to branch out as a king air contract pilot.

MY job is pretty secure right now. While the industry is realigning itself, I plan to remain where I'm at until I get 1000TPIC. It's going to take me another year to get it. After I get to that point, I may go PTOC(Part time on call) and try to branch out into the corporate sector of the industry.

Go back to part 135 or 137. It's times like these when I am glad I did not burn any bridges when leaving previous flying jobs...makes it easier to go back to that company if need be.

If that fails, I could go back to school...only thing is, for me it would be a second "make stuff" up degree or a "pile it high and deep" degree. In other words, actual work...ugh:(

I got a degree outside the aviation field, just in case.

So do I, but i have been flying plane for the last 5-6 years, A degree with no experience means nothing. Especially in this economy!

I am in the guard, so i would try to pick up some extra days, volunteer for TDYs, and deployments. Also, a friend of mine just became VP/CIO of an FBO/Charter/Aircraft Management company in the east coast, so hopefully he can hook me up with a job there.

I am also currently interviewing for a flying job, based where I live (so I wont have to commute anymore) thats about as stable as any aviation job can be.

Haha yeah in the 5 years I've been out of college I've gone down hill quite a bit. I used to could do 3 miles in 21 minutes, was in real good shape. Now...not so much :D.

Me too. FYI, 4-6 mile runs 4 times a week was the norm at my academy. Not to mention the mountain climbers, indian sprints, and pushups that laced the pt-experience. Reasonable pay, good opportunities for professional development, and a variety of daily duties. Nothing like flying, but definitely not office space.

I've been talking this over quite a bit with my girlfriend the past month or so. Honestly, I can't think of a career path that I would be as passionate about as I am with flying. However, going into Federal Law Enforcement really interests me, or doing work in Human Factors.

I am not a professional pilot just yet. However, I did leave my old job to peruse it. Was a week away from leaving for Embry Riddle, thankfully I did not make that mistake. I was about to take out a loan to do my IR, Comm and CFI but with the market the way it is I am going to go back to working full time and fly weekends/nights.

I had an interview at Dow Jones on Wednesday, hopefully I will get a call back next week for a second interview or a job offer. Should work out pretty well. They are located about 5 miles from the airport I fly out of. I also will not feel rushed and will get to do more thing I want to do with flying and not just what I need to do. If I get the job I think I am gonna get my tail wheel before starting my IR training.

Good luck to all who get furloughed, I hope everything works out.

No plan B. Everything I know how to do right now is pretty bad. And I been through troubled times once before. So I'm just buckling up to ride through it once again.

Plan A: Pilot - no comment needed as that's looking like a tough road

Plan B: Executive Recruiting - well, as of today a couple announcements come from my historical client base... and hiring is slowing across not only my aviation niche but also the corporate ranks of the oil/gas industry (believe it or not!), construction industry, manufacturing, retail, and finanical industries. That's every niche I know. Not sure if healthcare or IT has slowed, but those aren't my expertise or interest areas.

Plan C: Corporate Training (Sales, Motivational, etc.) - well, that dries up as well since when companies cut back, outside training consultants in those areas are not needed. So that service offering I have is not a good option.

Plan D: Career Consulting and Life Coaching - well, this was only lucrative at the executive and VIP levels since the average person can't pay enough to utilize my services. But, this business tends to tapper off during tough times since if an executive is not sure if they can find work, they won't spend extra money on these services. They actually do the right thing. They focus on networking every waking hour they have. They tend to use career counseling services when looking confidentially for the next best thing, when they are already employed! And they use the Life Coaching part usually only when their careers are paying them a lot of money but they can't figure out why their life is still out of control. So these options are out.

Plan E: Ummm, yeah... See Plan A - I guess I might as well stick to flying. That's where my heart is anyway. There is always a flying job somewhere out there, just like in any other industry that is struggling. It may get real competitive and you may need to change your life and move across the country. But sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. I'll do what ever it takes to keep pursuing my passion of flying. After all, there are still real estate agents who stick it out for the love of real estate. God bless them too!

Currently getting to plan B, flight instructing and finishing the last two years of my degree during this furlough.

Plan C- Two years down the road, be a hotel assistant manager in Orlando somewhere I'd hope. This is why I am not going for an aviation related degree.
