Piper Seminole overvoltage

I have PA-44-180 overvoltage scenario question. The PA44 has a ACU the has an overvoltage relay. When an overvoltage occurs how does the overvoltage relay take the alternator "offline". Is simply buy causing the ALT FLD C/B to pop? Second what if the overvoltage relay malfunctions how would this change things?

It deactivates the alternator field. If it were to fail you could in theory create an over voltage situation which could fail or damage some electrical equipment. I'll get out my POH latter but I'm fairly sure that the ACU is the only method of preventing over voltage from the Alternator.

Get a high enough voltage, could burst the battery. Then you're left with one alternator. Also the alternators on the PA44 don't self-excite. So you need a separate power source to first excite the alternator field to create a charge.
