ok guys, are we going to lga/jfk or no? Where would they displace from? MSP, DTW? Are we going to get a new contract TA the week of June 21st? Are we going to be involved in any DCI aquisition/mergers? Lastly why is it exactly that you think we are not hiring/upgrading right now because we all know we need too.

Everyone is waiting to hire, upgrade, recall, whatever because they don't want to increase their overhead costs before another sub-contractor does it.

Stickin' it to the little guy.

To answer all your questions at once...

Yes.

No.

Maybe.

Who knows?

:)

But on a more serious note.

JFK/LGA... who knows. I think JFK is going to probably become exclusive to the -700 and -900 with First Class seating. But then again, they might still run the 50 seaters through there from time to time. Really don't see 9E opening a base up there until is becomes financially detremental to not open a base.

Displacements (to JFK/LGA). Bottom of the list. Unless they close MSP. I can see a lot of junior guys quiting after possibly facing a commute to reserve in JFK/LGA.

Contract... :dunno: Latest update said they would not be meeting with the company in person until June 21st when we would resume mediated negotiations with the NMB. Sounds to me like no TA2...

Mergers and Acquisitions... again - :dunno: But when you look at the DCI carriers that would make for sound business decision making (i.e. not flying just for Delta) there are not many options that would actually be viable for 9E (my opinion).

Hiring... we should have hired 6 months ago. Now it is too late to do anything but suffer through the summer with the staffing levels we do have (even with them decreasing some more). If we were to start interviewing to hire NOW. We could possibly see class dates by the latter half of June. That would put the new hires on the line sometime in late August and off IOE by early September. By then we should see our usual fall reduction in hours (although this year we will probably have more hours and fewer pilots). From a logical standpoint, it would honestly make no sense to pull our check airmen from the line when we need the staffing the most to train new pilots. 9E has made their bed, now it is time for them to sleep in it. The only thing we can do is to limp through the summer as best we can and hope things improve down the line (doubtful though).

Biggest thing I can see that the pilot group needs to do this summer is to be Safe, be Compliant, THEN worry about being On Time.

1. Yeah, but I don't see a base happening. We don't have the people for it. They'll have to DH people in and out or use transition flights to make it happen. What that will likely do is reduce the efficiency of the pairings and kill days off for the mid to senior guys. See MG's latest memo, and that's EXACTLY what they think is gonna happen this summer. Reserve guys will likely see their standard 8-9 days off a month. Use that extension refusal if you've still got it....

2. Don't think there will be a displacement. At this point ALL the bases are short, including ATL. Look at open time for June. 1500 hours for CAs and 1300 for FOs. Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul has already been done. There's nothing left to borrow. Plus, opening a base means you'll need RESERVES there. So, you're looking at similar numbers for a base in LGA/JFK as we have in ATL. So, you're looking at displacing 160+ pilots right there. That ain't gonna be cheap. Granted some would probably bid it and save the company some $$$, but if I'm gonna shift bases, I'm gonna make 'em pay me for it. MSP's block hours went back up, so closing that doesn't seem as viable now. They've also been covering most of the IND flying out of there. MEM is staying about the same, but our reserves have been getting shipped pretty much everywhere except MSP. We seem to be the "go to" guys for the ATL flying, too. DTW has been being pumped up with TDYs to cover the increase in hours. For once, I think the company was SMART with that. If we lose block hours in DTW, they're pretty much where they need to be. Displace guys out of DTW, and then you're short staffed again.

3. Don't know, but honestly I'm a little leery of having one of the negotiators removed, esp since it was the guy on reserve. From talking to him, he was digging in on some reserve rules, and it kinda rubbed the wrong way with some people. If that's true, that makes me a "not happy" camper. Just means I may as well go ahead and lay down in the middle of the road for the bus to hit me....again.

4. I doubt it. The Comair rumor is always there, but we don't have the $$$ for a merger, and frankly, neither do any of the other DCI carriers. Could it be done with some Delta $$$ and a shotgun? Yeah, but why would Delta want to waste money on something like that.

5. Wes and I discussed this yesterday, and he pretty much covered it. By the time anyone we hired got to the line, it'd be too late. Assuming we interviewed people next week, call it a class date next Monday. Three weeks of ground school, and they're into FTDs and orals on June 21st. Sims would start June 28th and run till about June 12th (barring any completely screwed up training scheduling issues). Checkrides for the rest of that week, with FAM flights going, we'll call it the 19th till the 22nd. So, they'd be starting OE and the earliest on July 26th. Done with OE frist/second week of August, once again, at the earliest, and able to bid for....September, when our hours will likely drop again.

Basically, the company waited too long to hire. Take that time frame, the compound it with pulling some of the MEM check airman off the line to run sims/checkrides/orals, and we don't have the staffing to hire. Ironic, isn't it?

I hope this is not true. A lot of the junior CAs/FOs are already "up-in-arms" against the union. Its pretty amusing to read some of the back and forth conversations on the company board. Communication seems to be at an all time low as well and that doesn't help things. I know you guys in MEM get pretty descent updates through your reps (I've read a couple of them from reserve guys I've flown with, higney and co. do a pretty good job down there) but we get nothing like that up here in DTW. A couple weeks ago when the negotiators were in the crew rooms I was out on a turn and was unable to ask any questions, so I emailed them to PH and CT. That was around May 7th....still haven't heard anything back. I hate to sounds like the guys on the company board but it really does seem that a lot of guys are losing faith in the union just from reading that and talking to guys in the crew room. Things like kicking off CT without a descent explanation just adds to that. I can't even remember the last time I've received a payday hot line.

Here is a couple of interesting pinnacle routes starting in june/july
ATL-NAS CR9 - done before
DTW-MTY CR9 - Replacing compass

Both shouldnt be regional flights but if thats all the seats delta thinks they can sell then hey what can we do.
That DTW MTY flight might be as long as ATL STX

I know what you mean...

It seems here lately that there is almost an equal amount of grumbling about both the company and the union.

I talk with my reps as much as I can, and if I have a question, I don't hesitate to ask them, BUT... I am afraid in the eyes of some individuals, the situation is to the point where they are losing (or have already lost) any trust in the union, thus making any attempt at unity virtually impossible.

Guys- I'm working on an update right now on a sit, these questions will be addressed. The company has access to all message boards (including in house since some of our pilots let em use their logins) so I am trying to hold back in these threads for legal aspects. Expect something within a few days. Sorry about the delay (MEM folks), it's been busy for us with flying, rep work, and hone lives.

That's no excuse! You signed up for it so you should be sending updates from your phone at cruise! People want to know what's going on! What are you trying to hide! :)

I got nothin' but love for our MEM reps. If I have a question I can text or call Ken or NL, and I've generally got a response within 15 minutes unless they're flying or repping yet another fatigue meeting.

-900 flying outta DTW? Here comes the big push for dual qual.....

can you pm the rest of us that aren't based in mem?

Ahhh...just another summer of the never-ending drama here at 9E...:insane:

My view-although this summer is probably gonna suck being on reserve (and a commuter at that), I'm gonna get a TON of hours. Hours that are only getting me closer to Delta (hopefully) or somewhere else....

Meanwhile... the DTW reps (as mentioned above) are AWOL, and folks still are steaming over the ATL reps voting "yes" on the TA.

The ATL reps made the right decision, if maybe for the wrong reasons. It would have been a nightmare if the MEC had rejected the TA without sending it out for a vote. The NMB would have wanted blood.

When were the DTW reps last elected? Did anyone run against them?

I've got no idea man. Obviously it's "my fault" for not knowing more. I just showed up in base, so my mileage may vary (they haven't appeared any more or less than the ATL guys). I haven't checked. I'm personally not that upset about how the reps in either base have been doing... but I definitely keep track of the pulse of the "pilot group". Finally got on (another) committee, so now I'm getting lots of questions for other MEC/LEC reps from folks, and trying to convince folks that the union isn't as bad as the line pilots think...

Funny thing - it's darn hard to get guys who are jaded to donate to ALPA-PAC

--- extra side note, it's only $2/mo, but I just signed/sent in my PAC card!

Now that's something I never thought I'd see. Things must have really changed down there.

I've had more communication with the MEM reps since March than I did in the previous four YEARS. I also feel more represented than I did before. Previous reps were more of "Well, that's just how it goes. You'll get used to it." or made me feel like my input didn't even matter with zero explanation. Totally different now. 'Course now the super senior guys are hacked off, so you can't please everyone, I guess.
