GhostRider in the Sky
Hello all, I'm hoping that someone who may be a mechanic can post a photo of the bypass duct on the P&W JT8D. I know it is a low bypass engine and the bypass duct isn't that big, but I'd like a shot of the air's pathway between the nacelle and the compressor/turbine casing.
I've attached a photo below of a Tristar that describes what I'm kinda looking for. I know that on a JT8 you won't be able to see straight through the duct like on this RB211, but whatever someone could come up with would be cool.

Something else about this photo that I think it neat, look at the core of this engine and the casing around it... it looks like and old turbojet engine hanging off the wing of a 707 or something from that era! If you took the fan/fan case and the outer nacelle off it would look like an old straightpipe engine!

Kinda hard to call the JT8D a bypass engine although there was SOME bypass air but certainly nothing like the BIG fans like the JT9D or the GP7200 or even the CFM56.

I'll get you one on my next walk around... ;-) I'm still off for a few more days, though.

JT8D-219 OK?

It is a turbofan engine, although the bypass ratio is not as high as an RB-211 , JT9, or PW 2030....

Here's some more cutaway close ups... You can see the bypass duct a bit better.

The bypass rations is about 1.74 to 1.0 for the low bypass jT8D

Well, a check airman booted me off the trip for an OE, not that I'm complaining! It's going to be next week...

IOE. Initial Operating Experience. Your first actual flights in the a/c after ground school and sims.

That second photo looks like it might be fron N7017U, the United 727 hanging up in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. I'd like to head up there and do some tourism after Daley's out of office (May 16, 2011).

You are well aware of where that 727 landed for the final time, I assume....
