Photo editing software- recommendations?

I was using Picasa for years as a nice, free basic editor/organizer, but apparently it's not available for windows 8. I'm combing through cnet reviews right now, just curious if anyone here could recommend a reasonably good freeware program for photos.

Or convince me to spend money on something that's really worth the money.

Thanks.

I'm running Picasa on a Windows 8 box with no problems.

For editing I use Lightroom (for RAWS) and Photoshop for everything else.

I've been using Lightroom 5 lately. I really like the organization that it provides. Once you buy in to the method it's really nice to catalog all your photos.
Not sure how much it costs but I assume it's worth the money.

The gimp is probably the best free program. I'd give that a try, and if it's not working out, look for something that costs money.

I use Lightroom as part of Adobe Creative Cloud. Pretty swank.

Runs very well on my Air.

Interesting. I didn't even attempt to download it because it seemed to specifically exclude Windows 8. Also kind of seems like Google has abandoned it. Hadn't seen any updates for a long time. Maybe I'll try gimp for a bit and go back to Picasa if it doesn't click with me.

GIMP does everything that you could possibly ever need. About the only reason not to use it would be if you plan to be a professional graphic design person - then knowing Photoshop might be worth it. For the average person, GIMP is more than enough.

Are you looking more for editing or more for organization? The GIMP is great for editing but I think you'll be really disappointed if you're looking for more of Picasa's organization features.

I haven't really been paying attention to feature updates for a while now. It seems to do everything I need it to do. I've mostly just used it for geotagging images and as a front end for the folder setup I've used to store pictures for the last 6 years. I do all my editing in other applications so I've never really played around with that side of it. I just checked again and it runs fine on Windows 8.

Downloaded both. Picasa works just fine on W8. I'll start playing around with gimp soon. I'm in a crappy position at the moment with camera equipment, so I'm not even taking great pictures lately. Gotta get a new point and shoot to carry in my flight bag. And someday, another SLR.

I am also using Lightroom. I like the layout and its reasonably priced compared to Adobe's higher end options.
