PHI

Have any of you guys heard of PHI putting in place a 250 hr copilot spot? I heard of it on the rumor websites but can not seem to verify it.

I have not heard that... but how would that work anyway? Only a few birds out there require two crew members.

They have some med twins that could use two. All of the IFR ships have to have two. From what I gather you sign a training contract and the starting pay is around low 40's.
BTW A friend of mine just got picked up at ERA with 700 hrs.

My 2 cents for what is worth.
I could throw a rock and hit the PHI or at least one of there pads from where I live.
All the companies are hiring right now. I don't know about the 250 hours but I have heard 500 hours for right seat. I will find out.
There are about 4 helo companies here in the gulf and they are all hiring.
The oilfield business is booming right now and is expected to last about 4 to 5 years.
They do fly some pretty big ships out of here so I know they do have many co pilots as well as they are flying an unreal amount. I also see them training everyday. I would think 250 would be kind of low, however I am new to helos and am taking my add on test next week for private then going to do inst add on as well.

Here is my issue:

I'd love to build some hours working for an oil company in order to be competitive for an EMS job. But... my wife hates the south, is scared of the gulf region (Katrina!) and really needs a large-ish city in order to find a job.

So... what cities are out there that are large, close enough to commute, and are the least likely to be hit by the next big one?

Or am I asking too much...

You could commute. I have a freind who works down there and lives in Seattle. He works 2 weeks on 2weeks off. They have housing at the bases.

Yeah, but you have to get yourself to work if you commute, right?

Some of the companies have jump seat agreements with some airlines. Airlog for one. Additionally, you can do the 7/7 or 14/14. There are people from other states commuting. If you're looking for big cities away from the gulf close enough to commute and not have to drive for too long, you can try Dallas, Memphis, Shreveport, Jackson, Montgomery. I think Houston and Baton Rouge, although closer to the Gulf, are safe enough to live in.
