Pay for Airliners.net ?

It's not a right.....it's a privilege.

Once your traffic picks up appreciably and I'm sure Johann is using a lot of bandwidth, costs skyrocket thru the roof. I know without ad revenue here at Jetcareers, I'd be in a rock and a hard place cost wise.

I wouldn't charge for forum access here at JC, but I'm sure he's got to be very creative to fund that site. Whew! I'd hate to see his overhead because mine's pretty high as well.

Airliners net is only great for looking at hot babes (planes). The forums are crazy... now back to the question, there was a time when people could register for free. But after so much bandwith was eating up, I guess the mods decided to make it a pay site for new registered users. I never bothered to register there, long time lurker with A.net and JC.com and I think that JC is better and most of all it is FREE!!!!

Nah I got registered a long time ago so I pay nothing. The tech / ops sometimes has some good stuff but it is nothing like JC

Also the thread progression there is something like:

Question
Wrong answer by a random guy
Wrong answer by a simmer
Wrong answer by a simmer
Right answer by a pilot
Simmer argues with pilot
Pilot argues with simmer
Simmer argues again
Pilot gives up
Someone asks what the original question meant in the first place
Someone answers
Ten people say 'I agree'
Someone posts a bunch of pictures of airplanes

I'm one of the 'old timers' over there because before I had my own forum back in 2000, that was pretty much the only place to go. So I guess I got "grandfathered" in.

I guess the big thing is that 99% of people that visit my website are looking for either flight training or pilot-type services, so I'm able to tell a potential advertiser that I've got a pretty tight demographic and the people they're looking for are right here.

Even though avweb.com, landings.com and various print media get 10-25 times the amount that I'm able to offer an ad for, I've probably got the tightest, most consistent demographic. I spy on other website's 'rate sheets' and man o man, mine are comparatively cheap, but it's always a challenge to convince an advertiser that they'll see a ROI quickly.

But most of the users at a.net are usually ones that like simply looking at airplanes which have little interest in flying or pursuing a career. Probably catering towards photography service companies or the flight simulator market would help him with his revenue model.

That's still going on your permanent record, Cherokee_Cruiser!

Yeah I pay for that site, believe it or not you get some information on the site, if you look very hard for it. Of course the best feature is looking at them sexy beasts (Airplane photos) Those spotters can take some great photos.

Oh, the simmer/pilot arguing is the best!

It's just funny when the simmer claims to "know more" than the pilot, because he/she's bought some 737 payware aircraft for FS...

I was once pretty active at anet. I remember talking to some kid once about jetcareers and saying that is was way to slow and anet was better because of the volume. (this was within the first year of jetcareers). Another site that was really great was flightinfo. Flightinfo was run by a Skywest Capt named Bob but I think he got sick of trolls and fights between posters and finally just gave up on it.....that really sucked cause it was a great place. Then...Jetcareers slowly developed into what it is and became the best place around. At the same time, Anet was going down hill very fast and then Johan started wanting money to join. I thought I was grandfathered in but one time I went to post and it said I needed to pay up....that was the last time I went there.

I used to waste a lot of time and emotion at anet and when I quit the place, life became much easier. I don't miss the anet at all. Long Live Jetcareers.....

I ponied up the 15$ min for 3 months for that site, just so I could get info on which flight academy to attend. Then on that site someone reffered me to this much better and informative site. I dont know why google didnt spit out this site on the first results page when I typed in flight training, but at least paying 15$ showed me the light.

I joined A.net about 4 years ago, and never paid a cent. I still keep active over there, but not nearly as active as some people are on those forums. In comparison I think this site is waaaaaaaay better.
