Part 61 Instrument

Ok ok ok,

I know this has been posted about a million times before...

I recently switched over from part 141 to part 61 and am trying to understand the regs.

Requirements For an American Instrument Rating under part 61 of the Federal Aviation Regulation are:

  • 50 hours of Pilot in Command cross country
  • 40 hours of simulated or actual instrument time
  • 15 hours of flight instruction towards Instrument Rating
Does the 50 hrs encompass the 40hrs of time, or is that in addition? How many hours can come from sim training?

You will need to have a total of 50 hours cross country time (It dont matter if it was Instrument, actual, or or VFR, It can include whatever training you would like as long as you landed somewhere that was over 50 NM away from your departure and you was the sole manipulator and rated in the plane)

Depends on the sim and what it is approved for. Normally you can use up to 20 hours of sim time towards your instrument time. The Sim our school uses though is only approved for 15 hours.

Note: You can NOT log cross country time in a sim

You could, and many do, most or all of the 50 hours of XC under the hood. I know several of my post-PPL XC flights were made under the hood exactly for that reason.

I got my 61 Instrument Rating in January of this year. I know I spent most of my 50hrs PIC XC under the hood, however I did have about 10hrs in the Frasca which counted toward the 40hrs of instrument time needed (we could log up to 20). Overall, it took way longer to build the 50hrs PIC XC than the sim inst. time, if that is what you're worried about. I probably had 60hrs instr. time (including 2.7 actual) by the time I had all the XC I needed. Remember all the time you spend under the hood/in actual learning approaches, holding, etc., all count toward that 40hrs.

Hope this helps a little bit!

Thanks guys that does help! Really the biggest reason why I had to switch was because my schedule couldn't accomodate the ground school requirements for part 141 (Mon-Fri 8AM-NOON).

Thanks a bunch!
