PA-28-140 down in Heflin, AL

Flew PNS-ATL about 9-10 pm Eastern that night. It was...unpleasant, esp. around Montgomery. Wouldn't have wanted to do it without radar.

This doesn't warrant a whole thread, but we just had a Citabria Banner Tower go down here Christmas Eve. No injuries, A/C lost a wing though. Based at KSPG (across the street from my house), landed on the 12th at my country club (4 miles down the road).

I've taxied behind it many times "Taildragger XZY, follow the taildragger..."

Yep, student pilot.

And this is the closest weather I can find to where they said he crashed.

Yeah if the times are to be believed, he probably crashed about the time I landed at Hartsfield. Steady (strong) winds under the overcast, but bumpy as heck in it (constant light occasional moderate). Not weather anyone (IMHO) would want to be in in a pa28, let alone a student pilot. I admire his big brass ones, though. RIP.

I saw that on the news. I love how the reporter said, "The pilot decided to land on the fairway instead of a runway."

Fixed it for ya. Rumor here is that it was fuel, but I doubt that. Reminder to everyone, a golf course as more than enough room for most piston singles.

I know the pilot wouldn't have gone to the fairway if he could have gone to a runway, but try to tell a reporter. ;)

As for the fuel causing it, that was actually my first thought (not him running out, but possibly water contamination). They said it popped and stopped, then started up again, then cut out again. Someone was telling me about a time they had water in the fuel and the exact same thing happened, though it did start up again after a few minutes. I don't know how much time he had to have possibly restarted the engine again.

That must have been one hell of a ride...............

His? One can only imagine. Mine was maybe a 7/10 on the FreightTerror scale. Past "ugh, bad night" and short of "God, if you get me out of this one, I'll stop drinking and start giving to Save The Children". It IS disconcerting when water gets in the flexed-out frame and the "door open" light starts setting off the master caution. ;)

Don't know whether the reg number is public knowledge. For purposes of comparison here's my flightaware for the night. The more you know, etc, etc.

Way to not ask for direct, Pansy!

Don't Deviate!... Penetrate!

Now I'm calling moderate turbulence for stuff I used to nap in. The cargo unloads itself and we complain that they have 5 suitcases.
Whole other world outside freight buddy. I miss flying the 35s every day.

...or you'll be late!

I'm becoming such a..."meow" in my old age. There was a time I would have asked for a heading (being /A), cinched down the ole noggin-saver, and ridden it out. You aren't alone in your shame, fellow doggy (once, always, etc). ;)

I live in the general area of the crash...We had some heavy wind and rain that night. Accidents like this are 100% avoidable. I took the time to look this kid up on myspace. It looks like he had a lot going for him. Very sad..RIP
