I'm just wondering what do military pilots do when there not flying? Are they doing other flying related things or are they just pushing paper in a office somewhere? Also, I was told that you do a tour that your not flying. What do pilots do during this tour and how long is it usually?

Squadrons have many other duties that need to be filled: scheduling, training, duty officer, electronic warfare officer, standards officer, etc. All are secondary BS (or primary, since it's what you get rated on), that needs to be accomplished.

Non-flying duties include staff tours and other BS that are needed in order to get promoted and be a "well rounded" officer, whatever that means. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Thanks for the reply. I've never understood why the military spends all the time and money to train you how to fly a certain plane, then after a few years they put you in a desk job for a while. Well, I guess thats the government for 'ya.

Well, think about it...if you're going to fly 30 hours per month, it would be a bigger waste to let you go home and they pay another officer to be the training officer.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

The whole point is supposed to be that you're not going to fly your whole career.......you're being groomed to be the future leader and higher ranking person that works at the "macro-level" of the military vs the "micro level" of just being a pilot for the military.
 
Those are the people that go to the "Big Picture School" versus those of us that attended the "Wallet Size Institute" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I always had to explain that to my new guys when they checked in. They were always asking why, when and where. had to educate them on the ways of being a mushroom. I know in the Navy helo squadron's colateral duties for pilot's are a joke. Man those guys can skate! I was envious.
