OSH question

For those who have gone in the past, how much money should I expect to spend on necessities (food), do vendors take Visa and are there any ATMs? Will 100LL be more or less expensive than normal?

Thanks,

Alex.

I can help you with some of these as far as I remember (I was there last year)

1. We only ate on the grounds one day and it was typical county fair prices, I think like 9 dollars for a cheeseburger fries and a coke. Everyother day we would eat at a local restaurant and pay the expected restaurant prices. There are some great restaurants in the surrounding areas
2. Vendors do take credit cards, especially the big money ones, but the smaller stands do as well. There are a TON of big ticket items that they just couldnt expect someone to pay cash for.
3. There were ATM's strategically located if my memory serves me correctly
4. I can not tell you for sure about the 100ll but I would have to guess yes.
BONUS: The only place you can buy beer on the grounds is the beer tent, and it was located absolutely in the middle of nowhere (if you are into that kind of thing)

Thank you for the information. I'm flying in so won't have any ground transportation. Are the resturants you're talking about within walking distance? I was 6 the last time I went and cannot remember anything at all.

Haha, look at the second part of my name. I have four years until I can make use of that tent.

Alex.

I was there last year and will be there this year as well. It is a great time, but yes, food is priced pretty steep as stated above.

As far as restaurants within walking distance. Not really.... You'd have to have a car to cross the highway to the main drag of restaurants.

Though if I recall, they might have some sort of shuttle service.

Been there about 8 times now. You can hop a shuttle, or get to know people you are camping around (if you are camping...) and hook up for trips into town.

All food at OSH is the food tent variety, and around $9 or so like they said. Restaurants outside of the airfield are not really within walking distance, except maybe Friar Tucks (located just outside the airfield). The only problem with eating offsite is that the restaurants are extremely busy, so make sure you go plenty early.

There are plenty of ATMs scattered around the grounds, especially by the exhibit hangars. Definitely try to hit the exhibit hangars right when they open, around 10am, because the crowds can be pretty insane depending on the day. I also recommend taking the shuttle bus to the Seaplane base for a couple hours. It's a lot of fun to see the wide variety of seaplanes that come in and out, plus it gets you away from everything for a little while.

The museum is also free with admission and is a great place to get some air conditioning on the really hot days. Just be sure to stay hydrated and wear a hat/sunscreen because shade is limited. I love OSH with a passion and have been going for about 10 years now, with this year probably being the first year I won't be able to go. Still trying to see about getting some time off work. I used to live about 2 hrs away, but now I am a good 8 hrs or so which makes it more difficult. Oh well, enjoy your time there!

My dad's been an exhibitor at OSH for about 10 years now. It's ranged from brutally hot & humid to almost chilly. Summer weather in Wisconsin is very fickle :) Ditto everyone on the food & ATMs. If you can, bring a cooler with your own bottled water & soda, etc. It'll save a LOT of money.

One of the things I used to love about mooching off of dad's exhibitor passes was the access to the exhibitor's 'lounge'. The porta-potties there are for exhibitors only, so they get much less use than the others. There are no flush potties on premesis. It's all porta-potty.

Get there EARLY for best parking and least traffic. (Another perk of exhibitors, better parking ;) )

I used to go every year, but with the kids I missed it last year, and I really doubt I'll make it this year. Bummer.

Have a good time!

There are shower buildings...kind of sketchy though but get the job done for sure. I was supposed to fly there this year in an aztec from SoCal but this deployment messed things up so I will miss it unfortunately.

Another great idea for food is hang around the camp sites. The comeraderie (sp?) is so incredible there that you could absolutely get a cheeseburger from someones bbq. The only pay they might expect in exchange is a good aviation story and a handshake. OSH is like no other as far as a friendly environment.

Stop by the bose tent, last year they were giving away an airplane detail kit with the purchase of the aviation X! almost makes you not notice spending a grand! jk

haha..almost forgot...do NOT forget to see the flight of the ornothopter, it is a fine piece of machinery
