Online Degree\'s

What are your opinons on Online Degree's? I've heard alot of good things about doing it at your own pace and for people with troubles in class to concentrate its great...

Personally I hate highschool, I'm finishing up in a year or 2 and I need a degree and I was thinking about getting an online degree but I thought i'd ask on here if anyone knew anything or even did it before?

I was thinking of working CFI and doing online degree partime therefore can go regional someday -*Dreaming*-,

Anyone know how much they cost too , in the ball park range?

And when you take out student loans on them you have 4 years of no paying then you pay after the four years or since u have a job you have to pay as your doing it?

Thanks for your time

Re: Online Degree\'s

The thing about online degrees is they take a lot of self discipline. If you hate school as you said you might have problems with modivation and may be better off in a classroom. You may not like having to go to class, but it will be harder to slack off and put it off for another day. You could try a class or two and see how you take to it. One thing to consider is that if you hate school, you may not want a career in aviation as you will be in school for the rest of your career.

There's no reason you can't work part time as a CFI while attending class full time. You'll find that as a full time student you'll have large chunks of the day open, you just need to play with your schedule just right. Also you could take night classes to free up hours in the day. I had no problem delivering pizzas while getting my degree, I worked both days and evenings around my class/study/social schedule.

As for payment, you could apply for grants, scholarships, or federal loans, all of which should enable you to get some $$ for living expenses as well as tuition. There are also private loans you could get but don't use them unless you have no other option. No matter where you get your financial aid from, I'd think you should be able to apply it to an online program, but you should check with the financial aid people at the school you want to get the degree from for details and options.

Good luck.

Re: Online Degree\'s

I'm not exactly sure how secondary schools are setup in Canada, but the difference between high school and college classes in the U.S. is like night and day. I don't spend very much of my time actually in class at the university, most of it (80% or more at least) is spent outside of the classroom. That's something to think about. I hated high school, but have thrived (relativally) in the learning environment here at college. All things to think about.

I agree with what flyguy said. Online degrees are great if you don't have time to fit actual classes in with your work schedule. I'm guessing by saying that you hate school, it's the standard ready to get out of HS thing. Like John said, college is COMPLETELY different. I was in culture shock my first week. But the downside is that if you're not disciplined, it is even easier to flunk college courses than HS. The material is harder, and most teachers don't care if you skip class. They see it as if you don't want to do the work, then you deserve to fail. With on-line degrees a lot of times you have to be able to figure out material on your own with very little input from the instructor. Try doing statistics at 2 AM and getting stuck on a concept. Your only option is to e-mail the instructor and WAIT for a response.

All that being said, on line classes work out perfectly for me. I'm getting my BS in Prof Aeronautics from ERAU by the end of the year, and I'm only having to shell out around $3000 for it. I had three years of college from before, so your price will be higher than that. If you're going to work as a CFI (which is a great idea and a good job to have while in college), I'd recommend taking one or two on-line classes to see if they are for you. Call around to local colleges or community colleges. Some offer a combination of traditional classrooms and on-line classes. That way you can see which one fits your personality best and go with that one.

I would look into taking as many CLEP and DANTES tests as possible. They are cheap, and you can cram in the days right before the test and pass with a good score. They don't require the longer term ordeal that traditional sixteen week long course takes. Other good tests are the ECE series from Excelsior College. The also have a good liberal arts program that I will graduate from later this year.

The distance learning courses I have taken have all been very flexible in terms of completion dates. Basically, they want you to be satisfied and as long as you get your work in at some point you will get credit. The current classes I am taking are from CSU's extention program, and you get a whole year to finish one course. I can usually knock out a class (even upper level) in a month easily.

Damn straight. I got out of a whole semester's worth of classes through CLEP. The tests are $50 + whatever the testing place costs. For three hours worth of credit (assuming you pass), that's cheap. You can pick up study guides at either a bookstore or Amazon. Or check out some old textbooks from the library or a used bookstore. Knock out those boring core classes early. If you're still in HS, take AP classes to get some more out of the way.

Re: Online Degree\'s

lol could you use the Actual words instead of short form, I'm kinda getting confused LOL

Re: Online Degree\'s

If your reading something on the internet that you don't understand, all you need to do is go to http://www.google.com and search for it.

If you search for "CLEP" the first thing that comes up is the info you need.

Next time you won't have to wait for someone to reply to your question.

Re: Online Degree\'s

You can finish any degree fast, be it an online degree or a traditional degree. It's all about how hard you want to work. Taking CLEP and DANTES tests will speed up how fast you finish.

Re: Online Degree\'s

It took me Just over 2 years to get my BS degree. I took classes during the summer too.
