Ok, I\'ll spill the news

Yep... Finally got it...

Before and during the checkride:

After the checkride:

And logged my first actual IMC last night with some friends on purpose.

Checkride synopsis:

Clearance, CMK V374 DENNA BDR DIRECT, c/m 3000, sq 1200, dep 126.40

Flew the ILS 6 BDR, then missed app. On up to CLERA NDB at KOXC, held there partial panel, then followed the 270 MB from CLERA back towards DXR, did partial panel climbs/turns, did some unusual attitudes, steep turns.

Then "oops." The president is visiting DXR, so we have to hold at CMK for a little while. Hold as "published" then shoot 2 approaches, 1 partial panel. Land and shake Wally's hand, because YOU'RE AN INSTRUMENT PILOT!!!!

So if its a cloudy day, head for the basement, god knows whats gonna be coming through the roof next!

Congrats.

One of the 500-hour ERAU grads flew up and told us that he would be our new chief flight instructor. We kicked him out the door and kept his plane.

Re: Ok, I\'ll spill the news

Congrats Man!!

I always remember the saying my instrument instructor used to say "it's not a ticket to fly through the clouds, it's a ticket to fly in spite of the clouds".

Have fun!

Congrats, Brendan!!! How does it feel??

Thanks!

It feels very strange. One of my friends at the airport told me today "WOW! Now you don't ever have to worry about the weather ever again!" However, I think I probably have to worry about the weather a LOT more now.

First IMC-PIC experience was weird. We were sitting on the runway, my two friends contented with the fact that we'd filed for 4000, under the deck at 5500. They didn't want me in the clouds in any case. But then the tower came on "hold for release on runway 20, I have an ammendment to your clearance, climb maintain 6000
smile.gif
" So then the "atmosphere" changed and I just stared at the deck wondering what the hell I was thinking. "in 10 minutes I'll be in THAT?" And 10 minutes later it was a quiet "all white windowed" flight with me letting the "autopilot" (the trim) hold stuff steady. Very uneventful. Lots of fun. Eyeballs GLUED to the friggen instruments in a weird sort of paranoia.

wait till your first approach solo close to minimums......better bring a bucket to wring your shirt out in.

Re: Ok, I\'ll spill the news

Be careful using the autopiot while IMC. If your vacuum system go bad, it might put you into unusual attitudes. Flying in IMC is always cool, but you find that your scan increases 50 times faster than normal.

First PIC IMC is a great experience, though you shouldn't fret too much about it to the point of avoiding clouds. Just remember why you have that piece of paper with the words "Instrument Airplane" on it!

I would have told them to get the @#!% out of my airplane. No, really.

And about the autopilot, the only one I've flown in IMC was either switched off prior to entering the clouds, or watched like a hawk only in cruise. I don't know how yours is, but this thing was apt to clicking off at the WORST possible time. Definitely be careful.
