Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 Strikes Deer, Airport Shut Down

- On Thursday, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 struck three deer upon landing at Kodiak Airport in Alaska, causing the airport to shut down and the aircraft to be grounded for repairs.

- The incident occurred during the first flight of the day from Anchorage, with no passengers harmed. The aircraft is scheduled to operate a ferry flight back to Anchorage on Saturday morning.

- Kodiak Airport, a public and military-use facility, serves as the only link to the mainland for the island's population of 6,000, with Alaska Airlines operating three daily flights.

- Wildlife strikes are on the rise due to increasing commercial flights and rebounding wildlife populations, with incidents ranging from bird strikes to collisions with larger animals like kangaroos, capybaras, alligators, coyotes, and rabbits.

- Alaska Airlines, with many flights to and from Alaska, may be at greater risk of wildlife strikes than most airlines, with a notable incident in 2020 involving a brown bear strike on a Boeing 737-700 aircraft.

Yikes, good thing it happened on landing and not takeoff. Deer are no joke. One of the scariest moments of my career was taking off in a G-IV from Morgantown, WV at night, with a very high profile pop music band in the back on the way to a concert. Right as the FO called V1 two deer appeared in my left field of view and darted across the runway. I rotated at Vr fully expecting to feel an impact or two but luckily we just barely missed them. At least the flight department manager had a good sense of humor about it, because when I called him the next day and told him the story he said "oh well, if you'd hit them just come back around and land, then go to the passengers and ask who wants some fresh venison. I call dibs on the backstraps". Unfortunately there's not much you can do when you're barreling down the runway and they decide to run out in front of you.

That’ll cost some bucks to cleanup

On another note, a deer tried to walk into the Barnes and noble last night while I was waiting for my wife to pick out her next romantasy novel.
