Official Poll: Polarized or no?

There has been talk in multiple threads about guys' preference with polarization in sunglasses.


My eyes feel better when I used polarized, and I feel like I'd be more likely to see traffic if my eyes aren't stressed out and squinty than if they were.

What do y'all think?
 
I'd prefer to not have polarized lenses, but I'm too poor to afford actual perscription sun glasses right now and my clip ons are polarized. So...
 
Just remember - if you have a polarized windscreen or polarized instruments/guages etc. you will not be able to see through them with polarized glasses - It'll just look black.
 
I've found polarized windshields (we have them on our left side) don't look black, but they do look like you are trying to look through two polarized lenses. Our's and my sun glasses are not blacked out like you get with an LCD, but that could well be the case with a different windshield and sun glasses combo.

that should only be the case if you turn your head 90 degrees to what ever polarized item you are looking at. Though I suppose if a instrument had a polarized filter that is mounted a certain way it could be the reverse (its not visible unless you turn your head 90 degrees).

I find it is about 45 degrees for me. I like both polarized and nonpolarized so I guess it is what you like.
 
I go with the non-polarized. Flying glass cockpit, I don't wanna take any chances that the info I need to glance at quickly is gonna be obscurred. Polarized will help you scan for traffic better, so if you're mainly flying a 172 without the G1000, that's probably a better bet.

It isn't a big deal at all. I've flown over 200 hours with them and my boss over a 1000 and we've had 0 problems.
 
I never had any problems with the Garmin 430 when wearing polarized sunglasses, but have problems seeing the displays in my airplane. The other problem is if you are in a jet or turboprop that has a thick laminated windscreen. Polarized lenses make it difficult to look through the glass, as it looks splotchy with different colors.
 
Remember LCD's are polarized. This make sthe use of polarized lenses a potential problem when using LCD displays in such devices as handheld GPS and radios.
 
I fly 172s that are almost baby-boomers. I don't have a problem seeing the g430s with my polarized lenses. Rock on FF


I know what you're talking about though. I tried wearing them while at the computer and had some trouble!
 
I've always flown polarized... C172, Seminole with Dual Garmin GNS 430's, and an all glass ERJ with Polarized windshields.

Absolutely no problem. The polarization cuts the glare which ultimately gives me less headaches as a result. Some very minor rainbow effect on the windsreen, but not bad at all... and no... it doesn't turn black when turning your head.

The only thing on my flight deck that get's dark (not blacked out... just "dim") is the comm's (color LCD) and the newer style FMS screens on some of our planes... and then only if I cock my head to an angle that is so un-natural that I would never realistically do it.

The benefits most definately outweigh the negatives in my circumstance.

I have only been flying for a short time and have used polorized and have had no problem what so ever. Now I have never flown with a G1000 so I do not know how that is but so far so good with the polorized!!
 
I wear them, but do not suggest them in an aircraft with heated windshields.
 
I don't like polarized. LCD's can be difficult to read (PITA), and the occasional piece of glass turns to a bluish purple... whether that is in a car, an airplane, a motorcycle helmet, or the plastic cover I keep over my mp3 player. If I am fishing polarized is great, but otherwise I just use a dark lens. I notice no difference in eyestrain.
 
Non-polarized for me. Those oily-looking rainbows on the windscreens drive me bonkers, and I like to play the boredom-killing "spot-the-million-mile-away-traffic-on-TCAS". Anything that slightly affects your vision ruins the game. Then I have to read Maxims or do the USA Today crossword. And that puts me right off my MeowMix and Lifer Juice, ya know?
