Hi - I am a new hire at ExpressJet - and I am about ready to start OE. I chose EWR as a base, and I plan on moving to base, as I know how great QOL is living at base. I grew up outside of NYC in Connecticut, and love the city, and really want to move to Manhattan - preferably UWS, UES, and south. I have no debt, and few expenses. Location is most important to me. Does anybody know any NYC crashpads or rooms for rent, that are close to transportation, that I could live full time till year 2 pay starts? The areas around Newark, are quite run down, and NJTransit / Path is not nearly as convenient as MTA. Thanks!

Manhattan? 1st year pay? Wow I really have no idea. I know of crash pads in Newark and Elizabeth that are relatively ok, but not Manhattan, sorry.
In the TV show Pan Am crew scheduling arranged to pick up 1 flight attendant in the city on a helicopter so make sure when you find your crashpad that it has a heliport on top. In reality you might be about 50 years too late to work for an airline and maintain residence there. Good luck though.

lol - Pan Am 50 years ago must have been sweet... I guess crashpad was not the right word - im just looking for a tiny studio apartment. I have friends (non pilots) whom found affordable housing through their employer. The units are not large, nor fancy, but in awesome areas. As airlines really have no sort new hire housing assistance - I thought I would check here!

Cheers!

Good luck. I am sure you might be able to find something, but NYC is extremely expensive and they just raised the fares on the bridges and trains.

I hear Jersey City has cheap(er) parts. My brother graduated from Rutgers Law school in Newark two years ago and had friends that got apartments for a descent price. If you live there, your relatively close to all the action (Hobokon, Manhattan, etc).

Thanks - yea I am looking at Jersey City too. I like it, and it is quite convenient to the airport. My only requirement is to use public transportation to ge to the airport as Parking/Insurance/Gas are very expensive in the NY area, almost as expensive as rent. I lived in a tiny dorm room all 4 years at college as I was an RA for the last two, and am used to living in a tiny place. I am much more concerned over the location (safe, and runner friendly)

Thanks for the input!

By the way, I was thinking about doing the box route, but I dont have enough seniority to hold a line under a bridge. Plus the average NYC bum makes more than me:)

One of the "unwritten rules" of the crash pad is that it's a "crash pad" and not necessarily a full-time thing, but you may find one that's amenable to what you're looking for.

I'm kicking around the idea of getting an apartment in Manhattan if I get an NYC base. I'm looking to avoid commuting if at all possible, and I don't want to live in New Jersey...

I've been looking around and have found a couple viable options. It seems that there are a few decent options in NYC for around 750/month.

FWIW, I know a young gal sharing an apt on the upper ES, a 2 bedroom, for around $2000/mo. She manages to get by, paying her share (I think she pays $1050/mo, she got the bigger bedroom) on a $30K/year salary. She also found some 2 bedrooms for about $1500 - $1600 mo (her share, $750 - $800) in ok areas of Manhattan, which might be more doable on your first year salary. Found all of these on Craigslist, folks looking for roommates. Her toughest part was picking the roommate she felt she'd be most compatible with.
