NWA

This may have already been posted but......

Why is it that Northwest seems to be the only airline that still flies the older aircraft. (DC-9, DC-10...)

I think you just answered your own question!

Sometimes technology is outweighed by economics. Those -9's and -10's are paid for! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Speaking of old aircraft, how can you tell tht the 747 you're looking at is a -100?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the -100 has a shorter hump on top. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Different # of upper-deck windows and no business class seating?

Is NWA (Northwest Airlines) planning to retire their DC 9's and 10's anytime soon???

[/ QUOTE ]

Not unless they wanna be like the rest of the airlines (i.e. broke...).

BTW, I think at one time we had #7 off the Boeing assembly line.

I don't know about NWA, but it is speculated that AA will still be operating some of their Super-80's in 2020!

To be fair, I guess some of them aren't that old. Some of them entered service in 1983, but others weren't delivered to AA until 1992. Many of the ex-TWA ones were only two years old when they were acquired by AA in 2001.

For some reason, I can't find fleet data for NWA's DC-9's on airfleets.net. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's been a good move so far for NWA, but it will be interesting to see how fuel costs figure in if oil stays up like it is. And they are pouring a lot of money into maintenace.

The main thing they have going for them is less LCC exposure than everyone else.

DC - 9 & 10 at NWA

Good morning, everyone:

I fly NWA almost all the time.(Sorry, Doug). As far as I read from NWA inflight mag., NWA will retitre its DC-10 fleet when it receives A330 order from Airbus. DC-10 is mainly use for transatlantic flight.

As far as DC-9 go, the question is what plane can replace the -9s? I would like to see the plane replacing original "regional jet" At last time I flew out of DTW(about a year ago), DC-9 does not use tug to pushback. They simply reverse thrust out of ramp. I am wondering are they still doing that. BTW, I have sit on DC-9-10(according to co-pilot), it was built at 1961

Re: DC - 9 & 10 at NWA

Confirmed, Jane's publication Airlines&Airliners gives the following information:-

All DC-10s to be replaced by Airbus A330-300's over the next couple of years. They DC-9 fleet details are: DC9-10 x9, DC9-30 x 114, DC9-40 x12, DC9-50 x 35. They do have 36 A319s and 10 A320s on order, with options for more of both types, I'm guessing some sort of gradual phased replacement of the oldest DC9s by these A319/A320s. But in essence it seems the DC9 fleet will be maintained by NWA for some time to come.

Re: DC - 9 & 10 at NWA

Heh ... DC-9-10's .... screamers. No slats = fun! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If NWA were smart they'd replace their 9's and 80's with 717's ... same airplane, most of the same parts .... if it ain't broke don't fix it.

They sure do. American does the same thing with the Super 80 in DFW. It's cheaper than using tugs because pushing back thousands of pounds of airplane is rough on a transmission.

Speaking of those DC-9's, I had the pleasure of sitting in the very last row next to the engines. YIKES that thing was loud, I'm happy it was only a 45 minute flight from DTW-BUF.

Re: DC - 9 & 10 at NWA

Got to ride international on NWA A330's twice in the last week. Nice plane, for a widebody. 2-4-2 seating in the back. Business class has the recline-flat seats.

Pretty neat set-up for those of you that are big on the in-flight electronic stuff. Individual display panels with on-demand video and audio programs, including building your own playlist from the tune selections. Maps that you can zoom and pan anywhere (not quite street-level clarity, but you can definetely differentiate between neighborhoods). Games, both single and multi-player. And the electronic wizardry is not just in business class, but at every seat on the plane (except maybe the FA and pilot's seats /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

Not that the *toys* have anything to do with the quality of the plane. They didn't let me drive so I can't speak to the toys up front or the handling characteristics.....
