NWA 747-400 gets a new paint job

More right aileron needed at 2:59 was all that took over my mind when I saw that.

6 degrees and the pretty left outboard pod will need more paintwork. ;)

Yah that left wing was a little low. Man i want to fly a wide body some day. I could not even imagine taxing that beast. I remember when i stepped into the DA-42 for the first time. I felt like i was too high coming from the DA-20 and DA-40. Isn't that flight deck like six stories high?

They have painted 182 of 329 NWA airplanes. The DC-9 30 and 40's, and 747-200's will not be painted.

Eye level is about 30' when you're in your chair.

Never saw any balancing of the rudder going on... makes me wonder if there's a tolerance for it in the manuals or if it's just not shown in the video. I'd imagine there's between 50 and 100 pounds of paint on the rudder.

are they any delta pilots who jumped over to the 747 or is it all NW guys flying them?

We are all flying our pre merger airplanes still. SOC should occur next month, and a bid is planned after that to open all aircraft and bases to all pilots, except the 747, 787, and 777. They will be fenced for 5 years after SOC.

cool vid!!! i wonder how much weight all that extra paint adds to the a/c.

I know thats why they don't paint the space shuttle's fuel tank. That just burns up any way. I'd bet they have to do a new weight and balance for the aircraft after it's painted.

This forum, the guy says the paint only weighs 1200lbs. Thats not too bad for a plane that can weigh over 800,000 lbs. Not sure if that's right though.

Don't think I'll ever get used to seeing the 74s in Delta paint. Very different.

Personally i was sad when i heard Delta bought out NWA. I've been flying NWA (grew up in St. Paul) my whole life. My first flight was when i was an infant back in 1985. Still have my original World Perks number. I know it's hard to be picky in the airline you get hired by, but i always wanted to fly for NWA since i was little.

Oh well.

Does any one know if they will repaint the new Compass Airlink Embraer's. I've seen a few in Delta colors but I don't think they were Compass Airlink.

They have a 747 flying between ATL and HNL. I love seeing that thing roll down the runway. Every once in a while it'll be one in Delta paint. Personally I like the NWA paint job and think it's kind of sad to see it go. Good video

From a guy who used to do paint/bodywork on cars for a living, I'm glad to see that the airlines have gone to a more solid color with graphics paint job rather than a multi-graphic full body paint job that was more popular in the old days. You have no idea how much paint it takes just to cover the vertical stab on something like a 747. 50lbs of paint on the rudder is actually a pretty good guess if the plane has been painted a few times.

I love these painting videos. Spending so much time in MSP growing up that I really miss that old red scheme from the 90s. It'll be sad the day all I see at MSP are Delta tails.

All that paint layered upon older layers of paint....no wonder my baggage fees have risen. They obviously need to make up for the 1200 lbs of paint layered on the prior 1200 lbs of paint layered on the older; well you get the idea.
