NTSB Investigator?

I think one applies for a job when the NTSB has an opening for an Investigator! Lol, sorry couldnt resist. Anywyas, I would check out www.usajobs.com, or www.ntsb.gov and then click on careers.. If I am not mistaken, the NTSB is currently hiring a MArine accident investigator, maybe more., BUt I would check out the above sites...

It says that on the NTSB website under job listings that air safety investigators have salaries ranging from 77,353.00 to 118,828.00 USD per year.

I wonder if this is like when they say CFIs make $80,000/yr.

No, compensation is decent, those numbers sound about right, but the hours are long and you can plan to spend a LOT of time away on field investigations.

Those jobs are very hard to get, you need to have a background in accident investigation. Engineering degree is helpful (although not required for all specialties) but you do have to have some background and, I believe, a degree is required in a field that relates to what they do. This is one of those fields that those oft dissed aviation degrees actually will help gain you an advantage for some of the jobs, incidentally.

actually from what i remember, the NTSB hires all types of backgrounds to bring in different perspectives; everyone from metalurgists to regular job blow private pilot. Each has something unique to offer. Although I don't doubt that the more you have to offer the more likely you will be higher up in the pool

As mentioned previously, you just have to monitor the NTSB or the USAjobs website. I did for a while but I got tired of it because they were only looking for pipeline accident investigators. I haven't been on those sites in a while. If you know someone that works there, that may help. They still have to advertise new positions but at least you can find out the status of your applciation.

Good luck!
