No, compensation is decent, those numbers sound about right, but the hours are long and you can plan to spend a LOT of time away on field investigations.
Those jobs are very hard to get, you need to have a background in accident investigation. Engineering degree is helpful (although not required for all specialties) but you do have to have some background and, I believe, a degree is required in a field that relates to what they do. This is one of those fields that those oft dissed aviation degrees actually will help gain you an advantage for some of the jobs, incidentally.
