On a serious note thanks for posting this thorough writeup. Lots of information here.

Don't forget, it is not totally tax free. Uncle Sam still wants his money over $84,500.

That is some great information. I'm wondering, what exactly is a housemate? You said they will sponsor one? Does that mean you can bring your maid over? lol

This was something that was not even brought up at the information session. Would you mind elaborating on that. Also, is housing/education/etc... added into the "total compensation package" for taxes over $84,500?

Have no idea about a housemate. On the Emirates website, general employee benefits, it states there is a housemate allowance. Not sure if that is for pilots also. Hopefully someone else from Emirates can help us out with that one...

Thanks for the great info!!

I think I remember reading a while back about difficulty being able to qualify to fly (commercially) back in the U.S. after working abroad. Apparently there are security issues?? Does anyone know if there is any validity to that?

I don't think so. I flew abroad for a couple years and came back no problem.

housemate = domestic help

....and if the money is never put in a US bank and never brought back to the US.....;)

As a U.S. Citizen you have to pay income tax on foreign income over that amount. EK won't report it so it is up to you if you decide to pay it. If you are caught not paying you could lose your citizenship. Like Polar says though, you could easily skirt it. Not too much of a problem if you decide to never come back home to live. When you do and start filing taxes again, they might want to know where you've been, especially since you have a work visa in the UAE.

I can speak from experience that most of this info is true. I travel to Dubai about 4 times a year on business so I am very familiar with the city.

I will elaborate further....

Life in Dubai?
1. pretty much crime free

a. certain communities not exposed to that
b. very safe
True That---though everyonce in while you will get a token anti-american protest--nothing crazy or violent

2. totally drug free
a. penalty for drugs is DEATH
b. pretty much a deterrent
c. don’t have to worry about someone peddling drugs to your kids
Very true--you must be careful when traveling with medication, prescriptions must be in the carrier's name--though getting prescription drugs in Dubai is as easy as walking into a pharmacy and asking--

3. Arabic culture is a family lifestyle

Umm...Yeah-though Dubai is relatively family friendly

4. Schooling
I have no experience with this
5. Evening lifestyle
a. many people don’t go out until 8pm
i. dinner usually at 8pm
ii. by 10pm you can’t find a table
iii. come home – let’s go to dinner at 5 or 6 – “What? That’s tea time”
b. people stay up until 3pm
i. not rare to have traffic jams at 4am in the morning
c. just too hot to be out during the day
All true--Dubai has a tremendously vibrant nightlife. Very "global" and very fun. Of course you must be careful because authorities in Dubai are NOT tolerant to Mardi Gras type shennanigans but overall it has very varied entertainment and if you're a responsible adult, you will have a blast.

7. Customer service is fantastic
a. no waits
b. world class facilities
c. customer service is king
d. only 7 star hotel in the world
e. since cater to tourists, want to offer the best
True, True True True--Though it takes getting used to the cultural aspect of food (little or no pork-turkey sausage, etc) the food is generally good. In America we are used to a lot of processed food so it is refreshing to eat "fresh" foods. With that said, you will find plenty of western "american" style food joints, (Mickey D's, Burger King's etc.)

Hotels are expensive but gorgeous--unbeleiveable service in them too--Everyone is friendly and curteous. I have never been treated poorly because I am American. (though I do get glared at when going through passport control).

8. Abu Dhabi has about 100 years of oil left
a. Dubai has about 10 years of oil left
b. changed towards tourism
c. Dubai Ports owns 40% of all the ports in the world
d. buying up property around the world
True about the oil thing--Shiek is making Dubai the New York/Las Vegas/LA of the middle east.
9. Dubai is the same flying time from the UK to the Caribbean
a. first class facilities
b. luxury at affordable prices
c. and don’t have to worry about hurricanes
That's true though (again) the cultural differences must be understood and respected.

10. Lots of American companies
a. banks
b. big Houston oil company new world headquarters is in Dubai
(Halli-who?)

11. Three bad things to say about Dubai:
a. June/July/August
b. for instance – May it was 120 degrees
c. however, you don’t have to pay for electricity

You have no idea! 120 degrees with 96% humidity--it is awesome how horrible it is during this time of the year-BUT-there is the beach, the wadi's, swimming pools and of course really cheap A/C. It is the worst part of Dubai in the summer--then get jammed up in traffic!
i. keep AC on all the time
12. Winter is beautiful
a. 24 degrees C at night (75 degrees F)
They DO celebrate Christmas there--Put up decorations and everything.

13. Over 120 nationalities
a. everything is spoken in English though
b. freeway signs
i. left side English
ii. right side Arabic

They say that more than 60% of the residents are expats from one nation or another. You can tell--truly a global city (like New York) but very very english friendly--I have yet to meet someone who does not speak english. (though as soon as I bargain in the souk, they suddenly forget :))

There is a huge contingent of UK there too as well as Pakistani and Phillipino's.
14. Daily life is not impacted
a. not the CNN impression you see on TV
b. only time tough is the holy month of Ramadan
i. during daylight in public there is no eating, drinking, or smoking
ii. it is a time for fasting during the day
Yes Ramadan is tough but frankly of all the Arab/Muslim nations, Dubai is the most tolerant. Just remember to be respectful of thier religion and they will be respectful to yours. Ramadan is actually pretty neat--at the end of Ramadan they have a feast that (if you make muslim friends) you can get invited to and have a great celebration.

c. at 8pm the bars open
d. there are rumors of some hotels still providing alcohol in their bars

Yeah--but the hours are reduced and the "pahtee" is toned down significantly.
i. it is a tourist country
ii. not that it is wrong, but it is best to be respectful of the religion
Again--mutual respect goes a very long way.

15. It is a very progressive society
a. be aware, women dressing in shorts, bikini, or short skirt will get looked at
b. well, they always will get looked at
i. about the same as you look at a woman here wrapped up in Arabian clothes
c. women may need to cover up in some parts of the city though
Dubai is a cultural cross-roads--you will see new high tech and old traditional. It keeps enough ethnic flavor to remind of the roots, but then the skyline reminds you that the city is high tech and growing. Again, understanding and respecting the cultural norms of the city will help you assimilate into daily life.

17. Dubai Mall will be opening at the end of the year

Mall of the Emirates is already open and it's stunning. Has all the stores we would see in America plus the great movie theaters and of course the skiing-which is not next to the mall but in the mall itself--
a. largest mall in the world
18. Skiing
a. only $20 for skis, boots, and gloves
b. is right next to the mall
c. funny watching someone skiing past you behind the glass building
19. This is the worse driving you will see in your life
a. they don’t have tests
b. basically take the gloves off
c. you are in the fast lane doing 100 and someone behind you trying to pass flashing lights
d. it is like German drivers with one tenth of the skill
e. Emirates will help you get your driver’s license

THIS is the worst part of Dubai--I don't see how they don't kill each other on the roads. I took a cab from the mall once to my hotel--I told him to step on it and WHAM--he's driving down the median, on the wrong side of the road--making his own lanes--Holy $$% I thought I was going to die. To his credit not a scratch on the car and no one else was killed. I take cabs--I WILL NEVER Rent a car there--I was born and Raised in New York but those cabbies pale in comparison--
i. not difficult since from America
ii. you just have to take an eye test
20. Lots of great bars
a. the city is buzzing at night
b. although you need a liquor license to purchase liquor at a store
c. and you are only allowed a certain amount during the week
See notes above about nightlife--It is a GREAT place if you're young and single--though young couples would have a great deal of fun too--

21. There is no alcohol limit for drunk driving in Dubai
a. caught drinking and driving you are imprisoned for a month
b. then you are deported out of the country
c. taxi’s are really affordable
i. I drive to where I am going
ii. have Valet park my car
iii. and take a taxi home

DON'T ever commit a crime when out of the US. EVER. Laws are so different abroad that unless you want to sit in a jail awaiting charges ( that's right, they jail you while they figure out how to charge you). Especially in the Middle East where the laws tend to be pretty severe.

I like Dubai. I go there a lot. It is a very modern, very pro-western city. The exchange rate for Dirhams is pretty favorable, there is a lot to do, and they have all the modern convience of an American city. With that said, it IS the Middle East. There are some cultural differences that must be understood. If you're really seriously thinking about working there I would visit. I know Delta and American fly there through Codeshare with Emirates and BA.

I can try to answer any other questions--:D

Have you guys *EVER* at *ANYTIME* felt unsafe or threatened when in Dubai because your American?

Have you guys *EVER* at *ANYTIME* felt unsafe or threatened when in Dubai because your American?

Nope, and I was there as a U.S. Navy member.....Never a problem.

Do you think Emirates will be hiring in the next 10 years? I really think I could live there while periodically travelling to the US/JA!

Have you guys *EVER* at *ANYTIME* felt unsafe or threatened when in Dubai because your American?

I was uncomfortable once (like the first time I went through there), but that was more me than anything else and it was something I got over pretty quickly. I do feel safe. I go to the clubs, shop, go to the movies.

I did travel through during the Palestinian/Isreali fight and they had a lot of token protests but some of them were quite comical.

Other than that--the answer is no--I never felt unsafe or threatened. As I said, a great portion of the city is NOT native so it's definately not like Saudi or even Kuwait City.

BTW--I fly Emirates a lot (the Infamous Delta 7 from Dubai to Atlanta) and I can tell you the service on that airline is outstanding. For some reason the seats are also very very very comfortable.

The Delta 7 flight is one of Emirates American Flagships--brand new, new entertainment system and when they darken the cabin, the cabin ceiling has little lights simulating starlight.

Quite a good flight. I have also flown the Emirates flight from Dubai to JFK. Same thing, wonderful service and the food is actually good.

When I go to the Mideast it's either American/British Airways (which has good service -- but it goes to London >bad<) or it's the Delta 7/Delta 8 out of Atlanta.

Lately I've been doing the Delta 7/8 even though it cost me more--the service is just that good.

Flew Lufthansa once (not ever again) and KLM twice (like Amsterdam airline service was good but not great). Even flew a charter once (World Airways--great service, but the flight was the worst I ever took--mostly due to the passengers I was with)

Lots 'o frequent flyer miles there--

:nana2:

I have always targeted Cathay Pacific as my "end game" goal... but I might need to nonrev out to Dubai and see how things really are. I have a friend at EK (he's a flight attendant, so life is probably a bit different) who is absolutely miserable in Dubai. I guess everything is what you make of it.
