North Dakota Residency

Hello all.

I have a question regarding residency for tuition purposes. I plan on transferring to Grand Forks from the UND Aerospace Flight Training Center in Lumberton, NC this August. Obviously, I will be paying the out-of-state tuition rate for at least my first year in GFK. My question is, will I be eligible for an in-state tuition rate by residing in the residence halls throughout the year? I understand I will also need such things as a ND driver's license, etc... I have read the NDUS policy on in-state tuition which says that one does not necessarily have to gain an off-campus residence to prove residency, yet the application for residency states that a PO Box (which is what I assume would be my address in the residence hall) is not acceptable for residency status.

I hope I'm making sense. Basically, do I need to have an apartment to be eligble for the in-state tuition rate?

If you live in the dorms for 12 consecutive months, you are eligible for residency. For an official answer, call 1800-CALL-UND and tell them your question. They can help you out.

I can't remember how I earned my residency, but I think it was in less than 12 months. I registered my car there and obtained a North Dakota driver's license.

I remember my old post a few years ago where SteveC got mad at me for "cheating the system" because he said I wasn't a real resident just by following the minimum rules for obtaining residency and only being in North Dakota for school. haha

yeah register your car there, get an ND drivers license, hell, pick up a fishing license too.

theres a list of several requirements to satisfy and its kinda a 'pick any 2' (or 3 i cant remember) type deal... you neednt do them all.

BUT

do go to the business office the very first day you arrive and get the requirements on paper from them, so you can IMMEDIATELY start your 12 months by satisfying the requirements!

saves tons of money! cheat the system (by following the rules!)!

heres the list: from the UND website... go grab a paper copy and be sure to ask questions on how youre going to have to DOCUMENT that you have satisfied the requirements...

Thanks for the help guys. I spoke with someone at UND who told me that I need 2 items to prove my residency including an ND driver's license, the top page of an ND tax return, an ND fishing license :cwm27:, or a copy of a ND voting record.

I've got another question, hope I don't need to make another thread. Is there anywhere in the dorm parking lots to plug block heaters in? Or do you guys just have batteries with a load of cranking amps and change the oil in the winter?

most every apartment/dorm has plugs for block/battery heaters.

use cold weather oil FOR SURE.

get a BIG battery.

could someone please post a walk-through on how to do this?

1.) Move here
2.) Get ND Drivers License
3.) Buy a $10 Fishing license
4.) Continue to live here for 12 months
5.) When you hit 12 months and 1 day go to the housing office, fill out some paperwork and let them make a copy of your drivers license and fishing license
6.) You are now getting In-state tuition after they take 2 weeks to process your paperwork  They will notify you via email when the process if complete.

I got my drivers license and fishing license the week that I applied for In-state and they still gave it to me. As long as you get 12 months of living here, you pretty much will get In-state.

Edit- I did not even register my car in North Dakota, I still had Oregon plates and everything. They didn't care, so you don't really have to register your car here.

For me, it was more simple.

1) Got a ND drivers license/permit.
2) Showed proof of ND addresses for previous 12 months.

I did this mid-semester right after I got my license/permit and they even refunded me the difference from the beginning of the semester when I was still paying out-of-state.

Its not that bad. Hell I would move back but the job keeps me in the cities so take that for what it is worth. If you like the big city life it will be a major change. But the city has everything you need and there is alot to do you just have to use your imagination. Go fishing, camping, XC skiing, Skydiving, lighting off fireworks at -34 below air temp, and etc.. I came from Lost Wages and had no problem adjusting to GFK, my kids were born there, I was married there, and got confirmed there and also met alot of my friends there. So if you go in with a positive attitude GFK will be awesome. If you go in with a bad attitude then dont waste your money and go be a accountant or a docter.

P.S. the life of avaition will take all over the place and well there are cities the same size or smaller than GFK and you might be forced to live there for your job. What do you do then? Some of them are in even colder and much more isolated places than GFK. You gotta just bite the bullet and remember there is more to avaition than the Airlines!!!! Good luck and if you need help or advise you can PM me.
