This is my first post on the forum so Hi to everyone. I have been going through the topics on Jetcareers and it has helped me a lot. However, being a noob I still have questions and would appreciate if somebody would take the time and patience to answer my nearly typical questions.

I am 24 and thinking of pursuing a flying career. I wish to be a pilot for an airline (that is my goal, so). Currently, I am single but about to get engaged. I am planning on working and paying for my training through that.

What I wish to know is the best way to start and to go about my career. From what I understand, here is how I have to proceed. Please correct me if I'm wrong and in case you have better ideas, please post them. And please let me know the current average costs for all these steps and any ways through which I can save some money.

1. Ground school and get my private license. I believe I should get my PPL from an FBO instead of the flying school, is that right??

2. Go for the commercial license. Should I go for this through FBOs or should I go for a big name school like ATP?? Again, the average costs would be appreciated.

3. Get my CPL and go for the multi-engine and instructor ratings.

4. Work as an instructor and build hours. Ideally, after how many hours should I start applying??

5. Finally, after the hours. Apply, apply, apply..... :insane:

This is what I understand from reading so many topics and things. Please let me know if I am missing something and the best way according to you experienced guys would be to start and achieve my goals.

Thanks in Advance!!

I see your location is New Delhi, so the first thing I will say is you will have a much higher chance of success if your plan is to fly for an Indian airline. Right now I would not recommend planning to fly for a U.S. airline as a career.

Thanks for the swift reply. Though I kind of agree to it, the problem is that we have around 4000 unemployed pilots right now in India while in total we hav only around 9000 pilots.... so.

I am thinking of doing my flight training from Canada and building up hours and ratings there. Then if I have enough hours and exp., I might apply for an Indian airline.... do you think that's a good plan?? or it sucks?

Good idea. India's middle class is larger than USA's population. Once they catch up with the airlines, job security will be awesome there.

So what should be my first step?? How do I start?? Should I go head first to get my PPL or should I cover ground school first??

:yup: One of us is misunderstanding here, prolly me, but this is how he will pay for flight training, right? :D

Oooh, Sugarmamas!

Sugarmamas are awesome for wannabe airline pilots. Helps to smooth over the early years. Hell, I imagine they're good for everyone! Wish I had one.....and I am available if there are any SM's reading this! :laff:

LOl! Sorry to disappoint guys, but no sugarmama here. :dunno: Am just getting engaged to a gal who fell in love with me.... will work full time and hoping to make ends meet and pay for my flight training, maybe with some loans.... :panic:

Thanks for the links Bernoulli fan. Will go through all of them soon...

I recommend looking at some of the cadet programs in Asia since you have Indian citizenship. I'm surprised to hear that the pilot market is that bad over there; it seems like a fair amount of expats have been getting jobs in India. I wish I could get a job over there, but I doubt it will happen. :(

The situation actually is so bad that there isn't a single cadet program going on in the country right now. :deadhorse: Expats do get jobs but there is a very long line of red tape you have to cut through to convert your license in India. :banghead: Some airlines are hiring but have high requirements and want type ratings.....
