Hello,
Just curious if any of you in collegiate aviation programs have participated on the NIFA team at your college. Dowling has decided to re-start their team after a 5 year hiatus and I am going to try out. It sounds like it could really improve flying skills and make you a much more well rounded pilot. What are some of your experiences with this?

Go for it! I was on flight team for all 4 years I was in school. The competitions can get monotonous but you'll make some good friends that way and it does help sharpen your flying skills and knowledge. Also if you get involved in running the team it looks really good on a resume. Show up to the first few meetings to find out what it's all about and have fun with it!

I was part of our school's flight team all four years and also acted as coach and board member. I HIGHLY recommend it. You'll get a lot of great experience out of it in both flying and networking. Depending on your school you'll probably get some free flight time out of it. Our flight team was completely self supported so we did many fund raising events (apparel sales, fly-in breakfast, etc.). We even went on a few trips together and put on a 'fly-over' of our homecoming football games. I'd say definitely do it! If you have any questions about it, let me know.

Like all the previous posters, I was on the team at my school for four years and I have to highly recommend it as well. Great friends, and good times all around are to be found with NIFA!

Cool! The school is going to pay for all the practice, competition, and travel to the competition flight time, so it is completely free flight time.

Do it, I was on the team at my school, and I learned more from it than I did from some of my classes. Done correctly it takes a lot of time, but it is worth it.

I'd say to it. I was kind of interested at my previous school, with it being a fairly small team. Now, where I'm at, its such a large team, it looks as if is more about who you know, rather than what. I think it would be cool to be on a small team, where you know everyone, rather than one of the big ones (where they try to win the whole thing).

And to echo everyone else here, I'd definitely join if I were you! As with most things, you'll get out of it what you put into it. I was on the team at my school for three years. You'll learn a lot, get free flight time, and make great friends! ScoutFlyer up there /\ and I are good friends from the team :D

I just made it all the way to the interview (last week), but backed out after they told me that it would be 5 hours a night (5-10p) monday through thursday and on saturday...

For my freshman year in highschool, I really didnt feel like spending that much time at the airport. Maybe next year?

NIFA has been a great experience for me so far. Ya its nice for free flight time, but getting to know other people has been great too. It is alot of work getting ready for competitions but it is rewarding.

After speaking with many of my coworkers, it sounds like a lot of fun. Although I didn't attend an aviation university and am happy with my education, flight team is definitely something I feel that I missed out on. Obviously there are some teams that are notorious for being idiots, but most seem to be comprised of normal guys and gals.

Do it! Not only do you have fun competing against teams around the nation, but you also learn a lot and make some friends along the way.

I tried out for my school's team. Just waiting for the results, but most likely they'll take me. From what everyone is saying it sounds like an awesome experience.
