Do I have to have a current sectional and current AFD in the plane when I go out for local flight or a X-C?

I have the current (2008, 2009 comes out in march) Michigan Aeronautical Chart and the Michigan Airport Directory, would this work for flights in Michigan?

Thanks for you help.

There's no FAR saying you need to carry a sectional or A/FD. However, you should never carry outdated publications.

Do you have to?......not if nobody checks;)

Local flight, don't need em.

For an X-C I have a set of sectionals that expired a year or so ago taped together that I use for route planning, but I also have current ones in my bag. I need 3 different ones to get anywhere (Halifax, Montreal, and New York)....pain in the ass. I always have a current AFD. You need some way of knowing the correct frequencies and such. A guy from our FSDO said there is something like 500 changes in each AFD that gets published.

The FAR's say (pertaining to Part 91) you must be familiar with all aspects pertaining to your flight....I carry current pubs when I fly. Better to have and not need then need and not have.

§ 91.103 Preflight action.
Each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight. This information must include—

(a) For a flight under IFR or a flight not in the vicinity of an airport, weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives available if the planned flight cannot be completed, and any known traffic delays of which the pilot in command has been advised by ATC;

(b) For any flight, runway lengths at airports of intended use, and the following takeoff and landing distance information:

(1) For civil aircraft for which an approved Airplane or Rotorcraft Flight Manual containing takeoff and landing distance data is required, the takeoff and landing distance data contained therein; and

(2) For civil aircraft other than those specified in paragraph (b)(1) of this section, other reliable information appropriate to the aircraft, relating to aircraft performance under expected values of airport elevation and runway slope, aircraft gross weight, and wind and temperature.

Well, I don't know State of Michigan issued sectional and AFD counted as legal stuff. Give a call to Lansing FSDO and ask therir opinions. :p
