I saw that some regionals down there are hiring FO's with lower time such as myself, particularly Air New Zealand subsidiaries (Eagle, Air Nelson, Mt. Cook). Their website says they require a NZCAA CPL, MEIR, and a 1st class medical, which I'm guessing are very similar to my FAA CPL MEL IR and medical. They also require proof of legal right to work there and all that. So my questions are...

1. What is the process to acquire all the certificates they want since I already have the FAA equivalent?
2. Do I have to become a citizen of New Zealand or can I obtain a work visa or something of that nature?
3. I haven't really heard much about the NZ airline industry. Is this a good opportunity or not?

From what I've seen the past, work rights are very difficult to get for NZ unless you are married to a citizen. There are a bunch of industries that they will consider giving expat work rights to, but as of now (or at least last I looked) flying is not one of them. Also, I don't know if it's possible to transfer a FAA CPL to a NZ CPL. I know they will (or did) validate an ATP, as long as it's from an ICAO country.

Sorry to be not very helpful. Somebody else probably has more, up to date information.
 
Thats kind of what I was afraid of.

I tried to dig a little more after I posted this and found that the NZ CAA does recognize FAA (ICAO member) tickets but there are some hoops to jump through. So basically it sounds like I gotta find me a dime from New Zealand (PM me ladies), marry her, and then spend a bunch of money on moving and flight/written tests to prove the ratings I already have... just so I can fly a 1900. I didn't see any pay info but Lakes and GIA aren't looking so bad now!

Anyone else have some input on what it's like flying down there?
 
From what I heard your best bet is to go to Canada and get a Canadian ATP then go to Australia and get an Australian ATP then go to New Zealand and get your ATP.

Also agree on the your not getting the right to work unless you hook up with a kiwi.

In all honesty I think it would be worth it.
 
I would absolutely love to emmigrate to kiwiland, but as others have said, pilots are not on their list of required professions, are unlikely to become so, so your only shot is to marry one. Which I would totally do if I could just find one in Missouri. I fear the search will be rather long.
 
Trust me boys marrying one isnt an easy ticket. Im married to an Aussie and after 16 months in Oz Im still not legal. Did I mention that my children are Aussie and dual US?

Its really really really hard to obtain work rights down here right now, but if you do there is a lot of work.

Converting to Canadian certificates seems like less of a hassle, might just look more into that instead of the NZ thing. Thanks for the input fellas.
