new to flying

Hey everybody. I'm 25, based around KVNY/KBUR, and ready to turn my desk into a cockpit within the next year. I've been a passive viewer for the last week and I've read a lot of stories on here from people that have said the first few years of persuing an ATP career are the most difficult/financial burdening of them all, yet the most rewarding because you get to do what you love (not to mention seeing the world from a new perspective/beauty). I've heard it's never to late to learn how to fly and persue a career in it, whether it's regional or with a major commercial airliner.

I just picked up the Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual - so I'm tearing through that - then to the Gliem Private Pilot Written Test Book. I don't think I'll be financially ready to start training until January '06 at this point. But I think that should give me enough time to learn as much as I can on my own.

There's a couple FBO's in the area worth checking out, and I've heard to go with the school that has the best flight instructors.

Anyways, that's my brief story for now. I look forward to sharing my adventures in flight training with all of you.

Congratulations!!!! Welcome to the world of flying. I just finished going through the Jeppesen PPL book myself and have been studying more for the written and oral. Getting ready to finish up my PPL after that.

Study hard, enjoy it, and you will be so amazed. You should really consider taking the Discovery Flight at a location that you like which is around $50 I believe it is and they take you up for about 30 minutes and let you get a feel for the plane and see what it's like before you really dig into it and spend money on books/charts/etc.

I love the feeling of being up alone and flying....it's so wonderful and serene and the world is such a beautiful place from up there. Get to see many things you'd never notice from the ground and to soar with the birds is magnificent. It never fails to elate me when I rotate and leave the ground.

Once you do start your training, I advise to fly as often as you can afford and get away from your job to get through. It will be cheaper in the long run as you will remember more between lessons. Always be humble and ready to learn anytime because there will always be a new lesson to broaden your experience.

Do keep us up to date with your progress and best of luck!!!!!
Catherine

Welcome! if training isn't going to start until Jan 06, then your planning is great for being on this board and reading/gaining as much knowledge before you actually start to take flight!!

where's KVNY/KBUR? some of us

Thanks Catherine! My favorite winged animal is the hawk - with it's grace, power, and beauty, hawk's always remind me that anything's possible when you're in the air.

I'm totally going to set up a discovery flight when it gets closer to 'go-time' when I've got my financial status in check. I heard a discovery flight the best way to meet an instructor and check out the process/planes, rather than just the facilities.

Flying either before work 3 times during the week is my goal. I'm in a band, so music usually occupies my weekends for the most part. Though I'm sure I'll land a few weekend sessions when my schedule frees up.

Thanks again for the kind words and support!
Bryan

Thanks Kristie!
KVNY is Van Nuys, CA - just northwest of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley. Same with KBUR which is Burbank, CA (Bob Hope).

I need to update my location in my profile here

I'm in the Valley too. There are no flight schools at Burbank, so that's out. I checked out some at Van Nuys but they were a little out of my budget. I've heard good things about Van Nuys Flight Center. I am finishing up my commercial at Vista Air which is at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima. It's a competent operation and the rates are the best you will find around here. It's also easy to get in and out of. They do mostly PPL training, so you may want to move on somewhere else for your more advanced trainings after you get your Private.

Totally, I saw you in the Flight Instruction/FBO thread too heh.
After a PPL, I'm looking at doing a self-paced 10 month plan with ATP Flight School -based out of Long Beach ( http://www.atpflightschool.com/airline_training_programs/index.html ). That seems like it'll be the way to go for me, cause they offer credit transfer to online schools like UVSC ( http://www.uvscaviation.com/ ) , and from there I'd want to further my education and go for an associates in aviation.

Here's a question I want to ask you personally as opposed to the post I made here: http://jetcareers.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=323122&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
I see you've trained at KSEE and KSNA. Do you find that the Whiteman Airport offers a decent amount of air traffic to learn from? Or in other words, do you think someone going for their PPL would be better off learning at a larger FBO?

Not necessarily for the PPL. Whiteman is adjacent to the Burbank Class C so there is enough complicated airspace nearby. For instrument rating it might be more valuable, but what you need to do is learn to fly the plane and perform the maneuvers. The instructor will probably take you into the LAX Class B sometime during your training anyway. The experience I gained at SNA was great, don't get me wrong. Check out Orange County Flight Center and Sunrise at SNA. Watch your wallet at Sunrise, although the training there is first class.

For sure, I'll let ya know what I come back with next week from Vista. Oh and I hope you don't mind, but I read what you have on your blog so far, and I just want to commend you on your efforts to pursue your dreams! Very admirable and inspirational I might add.

Thanks! I need to update it more, but nothing really interesting has been happening since I've mostly just been studying the Gleim. And I think today I broke my one of my middle toes on my left foot to where it hurts if I put any pressure on the top third of it. You know, as if you were to apply toe brakes. It is sharp, shooting pain that would not let me keep the pressure in, so I'm grounding myself until it stops. %!#%T@ I hope its just a sprain and goes away in a day or two.
