Hi all- New guy here with a few questions. I qualify to take the a&P exams due to my USAF AFSC, and would like to be pointed in the right direction on what study guides to get to pass the exams. I've seen the General, Airframe and Powerplant test guides by Dale Crane, any good?

I never used those. I used the ASA test prep books and thought they were pretty good. They have test prep software as well that I've heard good things about, but I've never used it.

How are you going to prepare for the oral and practical? That seems to be the hardest part for military guys.
 
Thanks- I have no idea how I'm going to prepare for the oral and practical, I'm sure I'll get through it. Thanks for myairplane.com link, I took the general test cold, and scored a 57%, so I should do OK once I read a book.

What's your AFSC? I would find some new friends in the Sheet Metal shop to help with the sheet metal/riveting part in preparation for oral & practical.
 
I used the ASA software to study back when I took the exams, worked well. I worked with a guy a while back that had retired out of the AF and went to one of those one week (or so) schools that you see advertised in Trade a Plane. Worked for him.
 
ahhh...one of those pesky crew dog types :-) J/K...as a spec, I have to get my jabs in on crew dogs. What are you doing for work now -- still in or retired? I only ask since you mentioned you were a crew chief.
 
I was working Transient Alert at Ellsworth up until about 2 weeks ago, hours got cut, low man, (me), gets laid off. So...I'll add A&P to my short resume.

I've been out 7 years, ran my sign shop for five years until I opted for a steady paycheck. Here's something that I do that airplane heads will appreciate:

I do the nose arts on the B-1 fleet here. I've done 42 over 12 years. This was "my" jet.

MIG...on the way to the Commissary today I passed by the aircraft display here at Tinker where we have a B-1, acft 071 that has a black cat lookin' thing as nose art. Was like....I wonder if that MIG fella did that one too--just a random thought.
 
I bought both sets of books and they are both ok. The ASA series outlines the test questions in a more orderly manner: by subject. But after taking the test I found that the actual questions resembled those of the Dale Crane books. (Yes there IS a difference! It may seem like they are worded exactly the same, but in many instances they are not.)
