Need some Opinions

Hi all! I'm in search of some opinions. I'll be flying on 3 American Airlines MD-83s this summer. Does anyone have any experiences on good places to sit on the Mad Dogs? Right now I've got a seat just behind the wing. I guess it's relitively close to the engine....what would the noise levels be like? I can just see myself going insane with the constant whinning of the engine right behind me.....

Best place to sit: Window seat behind Emergency exit row, on all planes, IMO. Aside from the obvious, there's usually no seat in front of you and tons of leg room.

If you are looking for opinions you come to the right place my friend! The best seat (besides on the flight deck) is in First class!

If you must stay in the back with us poor folks then I would get an exit row, but try and get on where the seat still leans back - some don't, but you must be at least 16, speak English and blah blah blah...

And some planes have double exit rows (one behind the other - A320, I think), and in that case take the back row of the two because the first row will not recline.

As long as you are not in the last 3 rows, enigne noise will pretty much be the same throughout the rest of the plane. The exit rows do give you great legroom, but the first row of those seats do not recline. This is due to emergency exit requirements. If you can't/don't want the e-seats, then I would recommend trying for the bulkhead (first coach row behind first class) seats. These give you a little more legroom also, and you don't have to worry about someone reclining into your legs.

Regardless of which seat you go for, both sets are given out on the day of departure. So get there early and best of luck.

Have fun!!!

On my way home from MCO last summer I actually sat in the last row on an AirTran 717. Honestly, after the plane took off, the noise wasn't horrible. I was expecting it to be bad, but I guess the engines have gotten a lot quieter since the -88's and whatnot were initially built.

A couple years ago I flew in the back of an US Air DC-9. It was louder than hell, but since it was my first flight EVER, I thought the whining of the engines was the coolest sound ever!!
