Now that all EAS airports need 10,000 boardings/year in order to sustain federal funding, their part 135, 9 seat(aka 10 seat in op B1900) service won't cut it at some airports. Another nail in the coffin?

Great Lakes Airlines (ZK, Cheyenne) has had an application to provide Essential Air Services to the Nebraskan towns of Scottsbluff, North Platte, Grand Island and Kearney rejected on the grounds that they lacked adequate clarity regarding proposed days of operation and flight times.

The Star Times reports that the carrier had submitted two proposals: the first entailed three round trip flights a day on board 19-seater aircraft for a subsidy requirement of USD1.76million; the second entailed 3x daily flights on-board 9-seater aircraft for a subsidy requirement of USD2.44million.

"If the airline were to operate all three flights and only fill all nine seats, there would only be 9,855 passengers a year. This number would be under the 10,000 boardings needed for the airport to gain the USD1million in federal funding needed for safety improvements to the airport each year," the report said.

I'm pretty sure the EAS airports don't "need" 10,000 boardings a year. At Cape Air we only have a hand full of our EAS cities hit the 10,000 number a year. The 10,000 just gets the airport $1 million in federal funding for projects at that particular airport

That funding is a big deal to a lot of cities.

My first 135 job was for a company flying the Dornier Jet. Victoria Texas hired all three of our airplanes for 3 days to come in a fly anybody they could get to the airport. School kids were there on field trips. City workers were just hanging out at the airport getting paid. Basically we would fill our plane with anybody around and fly for about 15 minutes before coming back to land. Then we would fill up and do it again, for 3 straight days. All of this so that the city could keep the federal money.

While I fully agree with you, these "little" pork barrel projects are a drop in the bucket compared to the real issues.

I agree with the "real issues," but can't help to think of the proverb...

"Many drops of water make a mighty ocean"

Sounds corny, but there is truth behind it

Wait, the F-35 project has been a giant success.

Not when I was certifying it. Hamilton Sundstrand had that whole project on such a crap list. It wasnt done when I switched industries. Very ambitious but the integration process was murder. You think the F35 was bad you should see the breakdown on our newest carrier, of course I have a feeling the stuff I read on it is biased. Probably so much secretive crap that DARPA boys got on in 20 years we'll find out something on there that makes Aegis look like a fingerpainting.

Lol. I was in pax river for a while I accidently made some comment about the stupid osprey one day, I thought I was going to start a riot. Another paper airplane that never should have seen the structures stage.

It's not as much e fact guys were trying, I respect they started a job and wanted to complete it. It's the over runs and clear failures of the program before it runs through the mesh nets. They cut my brothers and cousins GI bill, hold up their paychecks, when they don't cut their pay, but holy hell lets dump another 2 million into a plane that will NEVER do its effing job. Cut the plane, sink a carrier, and give the military men and women their flipping money.

GAO has only begged for a CEO type administrator to cut items line by line and improve accounting for about 50 years. Take care of your people, like you did to my grandfather, and screw the pork.

It's odd, I started on Super Hornet during EMD phase at McDonnell-Douglas, came back to it during LRIP in retrofit engineering, here I am 18 years later supporting it from a major supplier. Can't get away from the damn thing. The JSF fiasco and extended G purchases have been a blessing so far, but I see the end of the tunnel with FY15 numbers, or lack there of. 24 years in defense aviation, I need to move to the commercial side soon......
