NASA World Wind - Earth Imaging Program!

Not a flying post but I thought this was worthy of posting here.

I just downloaded World Wind from NASA. It is a pretty amazing program that allows you to spin the earth around and zoom in at any point. It has various types of data and views you can switch on and off. Some of the images are stored in the program, but it downloads quite a bit as a well as you use it (high speed required). It is a 260mb download and it is well worth the time. My wife and I have been playing with it all evening and we are blown away by it. If you have the ability to get this I consider it a must! Yes it is free.

It does require a pretty solid machine and video card to run. It is super fast on my machine, but your mileage will vary depending on system specs.

I second what Acadia said. If your machine can handle it and you have extra hard drive space, try this out. It is fascinating to move around the globe and see things appear from the satellites.

Not only can you zoom in and out... you can also change perspective and it will create 3D models of terrain of any point on the planet. So you can zoom in on a mountain, lower your view point towards the surface and then pan around the mountain as though you were flying around it.

It'd be great if Microsoft could use the SRTM & LandSat 7 imagery into the next version of Flight Simulator.
