MSCD - Hello

Hello everybody, this is my first post here and I would like to thank Doug for his excellent job.
Just a little bio /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/spin2.gif
Im 17 years old, live in Montevideo, Uruguay and I currently have 16 hours, looking forward to obtain my PPL by June next year when I turn 18. This wont look new to you, I have always loved to fly and it is the only thing I have always wanted to do.
I started collecting information about aeronautical schools all around the world about 2 years ago. Lucky me, the other day I got in contact with another Uruguayan student who left at the age of 19 after finishing HS to the USA to MSCD www.mscd.edu (he is 22 now).
I know that now a days, the best thing to do would be to have a 4 year degree. That's what I want. I have been browsing thru MSCD brochures and decided that I would like to study the following:
Bachelor of Science Degrees>Aviation Technology>Professional Flight Officer Concentration
He studied this and also told me that Denver is a great aeronautical market, having Jeppesen, Boeing, Lockheed, United 2nd Hub, etc. Another important thing he said to me is that at MSCD there is no housing available so he had to learn to live in his own, pay his own bills etc, leaving him with the feeling that he is now ready to move to another place without major trouble.

So, with this what I would like to know is your opinion. I know this post aint new to all of you, but having about a year and a half to enter a university I would like to have a pretty nice idea from now on.
Do you think MSCD is a good choice? The degree?
Any other recommendations? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

P.S.: after obtaining my PPL at Uruguay, I wont go any further. I will continue my practical flight training once at the USA.

Thanks allot for your time!!
Best Regards

What's it like flying in Uruguay?

Metro....talk about a school that get's no press and nobody knows about.

They have a great program and it's cost effective cause you can fly with your choice of FBO's. They have a huge sim facility and have worked with the United Airlines training center in the past for internships.

You can't go wrong with Metro. At the same time, bear in mind that you can't work in the USA without a green card. We'd love for you to spend your money on training here, but don't plan on staying too long....

Do you have career opportunities in Uruguay?

Flying in Uruguay is nice. The only bad thing here is the weather, in winter its horrible. Rainy and windy days... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Besides that, well, its cheap, 50$ for an hour including instructor/fuel in a C150. Our geography is very plain, no hazardous terrain to find at night.

Regarding the green card, according to www.greencardplus.com the company would issue a labor certification and with two more steps I would get my green card. Here at Uruguay yes, I´ve got career opportunities. Let me tell you about our airlines. We´ve got two: Pluna and Uair. Pluna is our first airline starting back in the 40´s. Now pluna has got:
3 - 737-2A3 1 - 767-300ER 1 - ATR-42-200
1 - 737-3Q8 1 - 757-200
Luckily, Pluna is getting better and better. In a period of months they acquired the 767/757 and ATR. I know that in other big airlines this is nothing if you compare them. But after years of only having 737´s and suddenly these new acft (and there are more to come), its quite a shock!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buck.gif
The other airline is Uair, it started operating no more than 5 months ago with 2 fokkers 100 (waiting for 2 more).

What happens is this, if I study here for pilot, there will be no problem and I would earn all my certifications, but I wouldn't have a degree (aeronautical science doesn't exist here). If I go to Metro, I would have that degree and that would leave me above the rest if I would apply for Pluna.
Then you might be asking why I want to work in the USA. It isn't because I have no job opportunities here, its just that I would like to work in an American airline. Its like my personal preference. Neither is because of the money, its like a personal goal. Don't really know how to explain it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

MSCD looks pretty nice. I read an article about them in some magazine a couple months and they were spoken highly of. Hmm.. This place throws a monkey wrench in my original plan now! I like how you can choose were you can fly at. They have an interesting Aviation management program too!

Hey Don, How did you hear of this program? Do you have any first hand experience with this school?

DVAMD....I didn't look at the greencardplus link but I'll just warn you that scams and schemes designed to take your money and lie to you are part of the great american way. That's just the way it works in our wonderful, freedom of speech, country. Not that I'd want to live anywhere else but sometimes the BS gets almost unbearable......DCA ads are a great example.

If you can really get a green card...more power to you. I'm sure you could come to this country and attend university...plus spend your money on flight training, with little trouble. It's just that, in my experience, it's pretty rare for a foreign guy to make a career in the USA without being married to a "local".

Matt...I don't have any direct experience with Metro state. I tried to get into the sim room once, but it was closed on a Sunday. It was huge....must have been 20 sims in there. Also, I know a good aviation library when I see one. Metro state's rivaled ERAU prescott's....in my opinion. It's very rare that a university flight program would allow local flight schools for training....like Metro does. That gives you some choice for where you want to go, competition keeps the price down, and you get a real life idea of how FBO's work rather than a "big academy" experience.

Ahh.. thanks Don, Your opinion is worth its weight in gold for me. I checked out MSCD before, but never considered it. After some more research its looking pretty good. Thanks.

Thanks allot for your feedback Don /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Yes I know, its difficult to work in the USA and I know it aint that easy to get the green card.
Anyway, I want to go to Metro because that will leave me above the rest if I would return to Uruguay or other South American country. If I stay here and study for pilot I will be in the same conditions as the other aspiring pilots. Having studied in the USA and having a Degree will give me that "extra" that will make it easier for me to get the job. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
