I thought I'd show all of you that are interested what typical schedules and trips look like as you progress as a regional FO, from IOE to reserve to lineholder. Here's an example of a 4-day IOE trip. These trips are verrry nice because almost all check airmen are pilots who have been at the company a while and have good seniority. This trip starts at noon, finishes at noon, has no long "airport sits", and pays at least 5 hours per day average. Besides the commutable 3 day trip, this one is ideal for commuters. You'll never see this kind of trip again unless 1) you become a senior enough as a FO or 2)people above you in seniority mess up their PBS bid. The codes at the top mean this: Flight = Flight number, CS = Callsign, Tail = Tail number, Org = Origin, Dest = Destination, Dep = Departure time, Arr = Arrival time, Pax = passenger count, Block = hours:minutes you actually fly, Credit = hours:minutes you actually get paid, D/PU = I should know this but I don't, Dhd = Deadhead - Yes/No, Turn = time you spend on the ground between flights.

Here's a month on reserve. The code breakdowns are like this: "O1752" or "C3454" are any trips whether that's a local/2 day/3 day/etc.., RE2 means a 9am-9pm reserve shift, RDD means ready reserve, COBU was a day off where I was paid for doing some online training, BLOCK means hours you actually flew, and credit means how many hours of pay you received. Below the schedule is a synopsis of what it all means.

This reserve month is pretty typical. There are weeks where you hardly fly at all (Tuesday the 6th through Saturday the 10th) and then there are weeks where you fly every day on reserve (Tuesday the 13th through Saturday the 17th). In total I got 10 days off resulting in a 5 days on 2 days off rotation and the minimum guarantee of 75 hours paid. My trips varied from 2 leg locals to 3 day trips. Notice that there can be a wide discrepency between the number of hours you fly and the number of hours you get paid, such as the 3 day trip I did on Thursday the 1st. I flew only 9 hours but was paid for 20 hours. At first glance this appears to be a sweet trip. Put 4 of those bad boys together and you have yourself an 80 hour 19 day off month, but hold it right there smart guy. You were on reserve, so that means this trip blew hardcore. Here's what it looked like:

I arrived at the airport at 3 pm and sat around until my flight at 10:20 pm. This is commonly referred to as ready reserve, airport reserve, hot reserve, whatever. You get paid for 1/2 the amount of time you spend on ready reserve. Bottom line is you get to sit in the crew room in uniform by the phone until it rings and an upbeat voice on the other end says you have 20 minutes to get over to gate whatever for a whenever flight to where ever. What do you do to pass the time? Whatever you can! You can try to sleep in the bug infested quiet room, watch a movie on the couch, read a book, listen to the flight attendents complain about passengers, surf Jetcareers (recommended), etc.. So anyway, the trip officially ends Saturday morning in Denver. Unfortunately for me, I was on reserve and Denver isn't my domicile, so I waved good-bye to my crew who got to be back home by 11am and boarded my fully packed deadhead(ride in back) flight back to Chicago so I could sit ready reserve, yet again, from 3pm until 9pm. Oh, and since this is a Saturday, the last flight home left at 8:50pm so I got to go ride the train back to the crashpad, sleep for 6 hours, and then come back for the first flight out the next morning. Fun times on reserve. Now here's an example of a more fun/irregular trip on reserve:

This was a reposition flight from the maintenance hangar in Chicago to the maintenance hangar in Colorado Springs. No passengers on board, no flight attendent, just you and the skipper. In retrospect we could have shown up in jeans and a t-shirt, but alas I needed to get through security so I donned the monkey suit. Anyway, we deadheaded back to base the next morning and got to sit around the crewroom from 2:30pm till 8pm. I think I made it back home this time. Now on to a month where you're a lineholder! I had 11 days off and 90 hours of credit which is an improvement over reserve but representative of a junior line. The month started out with 6 days on and then 2 days off. It hurt but at least I wasn't getting a call from scheduling at 4:10 am. All the trips started early but finished up between 12pm-4pm.

The typical trip in this month was this. Notice the abundance of 2-3 hour airport appreciation sits(labeled "Turn") in between legs. Most legs are short 25 minute hops between Chicago and Green Bay/Saginaw/Traverse City. This is your standard junior 4 day.

Now on to a blunder of magnificent proportions(in my favor!). One month I was awarded a trip that is the gold nugget of commuter trips: A 3 day trip that began at 12pm and ended at 11am. These trips are rare and certainly enough people ahead of me on the list messed up their PBS bid somehow. Their loss, my gain, I better enjoy this because I won't see it again for at least another 8-12 months. The longest airport sit is 1 hour 23 minutes. Rock on!

Now on to a month where I'm starting to reach mid-seniority as a lineholder. I received 13 days off and 92 hours of credit. I probably could have gotten an extra day or two off if I had wanted but I had only bid for a min of 13 off. Most of the trips are only commutable on one end, but as a commuter I like to have an early show because I like to arrive into base the night before around 11pm.

Now here's a 4 day trip on the CRJ-700. It goes more senior because there are less legs and longer flights per day, it pays more, it's nicer equipment, and the west coast trips normally have nice overnights. I probably received this one because of the 2 deadheads, the 4 hour sit in San Francisco, and the 8pm release time. However, I had bid specifically for it so I was happy.
