MN Aviation CFI

Sorry for the delay in responding, I just saw your post.

I took a bit longer because I had not flown in so long. I have to go back next month to finish; I have jury duty and a liver check next week.

My thoughts. My CFI is great and he really pushes you to strive for perfection. I never really flew in high winds, but there I often flew in 20 kt winds.

The staff really helps you if needed and I didnt feel pressured to finish before I was ready. I hope we can coorinate our schedules so I can finish soon. The nice thing is all of the instructor time is included and since I will have to knock the rust off when I return, that is a big help.

An update on my story. I made my arrangements last week to go back to MN Av to finish up. I had to leave the class before my ride bc of jury duty. I was all set for my ride, but there was no examiner available for a week. I would have had to sit in my hotel for a week and wait even if i didnt have jury duty and an important dr appointment. I told the school this before i started and was told it wouldnt be an issue. After the msp fsdo called me last week to get a date, i told my cfi and all was good. i texted him to today and he said they were going to charge me $390 a day plus the a/c fee. i was shocked. i only needed a few hours to knock the rust off since it would have been 6 weeks between flights. I called the office and they said since i left before i got my cfi, their guarantee was void. i was quite mad, especially since no one told me this and i bought an airline ticket. even before i had to leave, i was assured i would not be charged.

i went to MN Av bc they claim to be specialists and use dpes. Well, after i left an issue arose and now all initial cfis are though msp fsdo. my cfi said the 2 who followed me failed and the fsdo does not like them.

I dont know what they are trying to do by charging $390 plus the rental per day. you would be nuts to pay at when you can just goto a school and pay by the hour.

i hope this is informative and i would not recommend the program, especially since the ride is with the msp fsdo. i will have to finish up at home and spend more time and money.

Sorry to hear about that! I contacted them a while back about doing some training after seeing your first post. I got the feeling that this "charging by the day or program fee" was not ethical the way they had it written out. Where are you located? njboeingfan

A lot of people try to cut the corners with these "programs". The good old saying of "there are two thingsnguaranteed in life : death and taxes" come to mind.

As a flight school owner i dont even quote the intial cfi candidates. Why? Because there are no set hours for this training and you get back what you put in.

Find a local school, study the heck out of far/aim, acs and flihgt training and aircraft flyingnhandbook and you should be fine..

I did not even think about stopping payment or legal action because I did receive flight training. The only issue I had was charging me $390 a day plus the plane rental. Why $390.00? I would have paid for the CFI's hourly time in the a/c as that was all I needed. There were other serious issues with the school that occurred after I left and even if they honored the price, I would not have returned.

Sorry to hear about what happen. Did you get your CFI? I am not totally familiar with MN Aviation's program, but heard different comments about it. They use two DPEs, one from Mason City, IA and the other one from Minneapolis. I am very familiar with the DPE from Mason City as I have taken my ride CFII there and had send students for their ride with him. The initial CFI check rides are given by the FAA and the only time they will allow a DPE when they are very busy.

I’m also interested how things turned out. I did most my training with MAI through MEI. Never had anything negative come up. I know Doug down in Mason City was allowed to do CFI initials over the summer when the FSDO was backed up.

They had an issue with a student and the MSP fsdo wasnt happy so all rides are done with the faa. They were using the des Moines fsdo which was not in their area. pm me if you want more info.

I guess it's a little late now but I was going to suggest paying the $390 per day on the credit card, and then contesting the charge with the credit card company.
