Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

MF, just realized your baby ticker ran out of days ... how's everything going your way with the baby?

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

Nothing happening yet; no dilation. Baby seems to be very comfy; it hasn't even dropped yet. Mom is not so comfy. Doc took her off work this week and onto bedrest because she's developed preeclampsia (high blood pressure -- can be very serious). She's starting to worry that she'll have to be induced or even have a C-section in light of the complete lack of progress. So, right now we're just hoping that the baby decides to get a move on in the next few days.

Inductions aren't the end of the world, and neither are c-secs.

Both mine were induced, and the second was a c-sec. The c/s was actually less traumatic & easier all around than the other way! C/S is surgery, with all the surgical risks that come along with it, but please don't be dissapointed or upset if it happens.

Hope it happens soon! Those last weeks are just awful.

Ours was an induction. Nothing wrong with it. However, have a sonogram done before you go in to see if the baby is too big. Our doctor told us that if he had known how big our boy was (they forgot to do the sonogram on one of our last visits), there was no way he would have let my wife go vaginally. He would have done a c-sec.

But - she's none the worse for the wear now. Praise be. I did feel sorry for her for quite some time! OUCH!!!

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

Actually, according to our OB/GYN, a lot of pregnancies are induced. She also said that only 25% of women have their water break without help. So, there's really not that much of a risk of being embarassed in public. In our case, she told us everything rare that could happen did. No induction, Nessa's water broke on its own and Gavin was 3-4 weeks (depending on which dr you talk to) early.

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

The problem with induction is that the drugs used cause more intense and more painful contractions than natural labor. In addition, because she has no progress yet (no thinning, no dilation, no descent), her doctor thinks that induction would require 3-4 days in the hospital pre-birth -- basically a 3-4 day labor. He would have induced on Monday if she showed any progress.

I think her biggest issue with the C, frankly, is that the thought of being cut open makes her dizzy. Squeezing the kid out naturally, however, doesn't seem to faze her. Go figure.

Thanks for your thoughts!

If you have an epidural, it doesn't matter. Also pitocin doesn't cause more intense contractions for everyone, there is no difference for some.

WTF? 3-4 days? I had NO progress with my first either. We started the induction at 6 am, he was born at 7:45 pm.

From someone who's been there, it's not that bad! Really! You don't feel ANYTHING. Nothing! Maybe like someone is gently pushing down on your belly, but that's it.

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

Amber's right on the epidural. Nessa had one, and she doesn't even remember Gavin being born. She was conscious, but she just doesn't remember. It was extremely amusing for me since I got to hear all of her senseless. medication induced babbling. She couldn't even feel the contractions when she was in hard labor, so we had to use the monitor to see when they were happening.

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

I don't blame you for wanting to avoid an induction. My water broke w/ both kids, but my body never progressed after that. If you induce and she never dilates there is an increase in the risk of c-section. I am really shocked to hear your Dr suggest it would take 3-4 days though. Having her sit there in bed on pitocin that long especially w/ pre-e is way too much stress for the baby. They would likely go for a c-section in less time than that. I know a lot of people who went 1-2 weeks over their due date and went from no porgression one day to all of sudden "here it comes!" so as long as her pre-e is under control, I totally understand her waiting to induce. I hope something happens for you soon!

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

I'd better not let my wife see this thread... she'd have a FIELD DAY with it.

You think the PFT debates here get heated, you should see some of the breastfeeding vs formula feeding or daycare vs stay-at-home brawls on some parenting boards!

Downright brutal I tell ya!

Re: Minnesota Flyer\'s due!

Well, my first one was 10 days over due. My wife was on hospital bed for about 2 days of induce labor. My daughter was not really moving - doc & nurses were standing by. Finally, doc said "If she is not coming out at certain time, we are going to do C- section." After that "prep talk", she decide to come out. The joke I have for her - "Doc, I have been living here for about 9 months. I need sometime to pack my stuffs."

Amber, we should arrange first JC babies conventions at Chicago.

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah, the phrase "to each his own" doesn't seem to have any meaning for some people.

We had another appointment today, and panic is subsiding a little. Being off work has lowered Mom's blood pressure (plus, her ankles have reappeared), and we did a fetal non-stress test this morning which showed Baby is doing swell. So Doc (different Doc than Mon., and much less alarmist) thinks we're good just to keep waiting it out for now.
