Military Experiences

How many of you have gotten into the military dreaming of doing something your whole life then changed course and ended up treasuring the experience in a differant role ??

Recently I just finished my Master's and I'm at the point where I feel comfortable putting out a quality resume that has been drumming up some good response from AFRES / ANG units in the Northeast. As most of us I've always been gung ho about that seat up front at the controls but rather than compete for a pilot slot that maybe not available right away, instead trying for a Nav opening. I've been told already if my AFOQT scores were high, which i take saturday, I'd pretty much be ready to go immediately.

I want this mostly for the opportunity to serve my country among other things. The opportunity to do it as a pilot or nav I think is a result of our hard work and efforts to get there. I'm just curious as to everyone's experiences surrounding opportunities and what decisions you guys made to get where you are today, whether it was what you had planned on or just ended up.

Really, this is where I ended up! As a great man once said, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans"!!

I always dreamed of flying airplanes, and when I was 16 I said I was going to be an officer in the Marines and fly Hornets. Didn't quite work out that way. I ended up being enlisted in the Corps, carrying a machine gun, and later fixing helicopters.

So, I took a different road...and I still fly airplanes!

I admire you taking the "unsung here" role by taking a nav slot. I am 99% sure you will get it. Either way you are doing a great service to the country! From the Loadmaster to the ATC on the ground, every role is intrical of the "big Picture" . Just keep the thick skin, Navs take abuse every day LOL! In fact let me get you ready, you will hear this often!!

Speaking of....WTF is up with the Air Battle Manager wings? Didn't we already have Officer Aircrew wings? Look same as the pilot wings, but with the "radiator" in the center replaced by the "Eagle". There was no reason to waste the money to create the Air Battle Manager badge when we already had an Officer Aircrew badge that was just fine. That's like the AF spending the money to create different pilot wings for fighter, transport, and helo pilots.

LMAO... I'm sure it'll be a blast !!!

The units in Delaware and here in pgh are the only ones accepting my app. for a pilot role based on test results to throw in the pool of candidates... the remaining however are for nav's... not sure if the one pilot was joking but he mentioned at times he wouldn't have minded being a nav since they got to do more than just push a stick around... but eitherway... should be more challenging and rewarding which is what I'm looking for...

Thanks Ya'll

Another opinion.

If you are in a flying unit, altho it is not stated in so many words. If you ain't flying, you ain't [censored].

Added to that, In the aircraft, if you ain't flying[it] you ain't [censored]. Totem pole wise.

I will admit that in the Guard and Reserve units it is not as blatent as it is is the active duty units. But it is still there.

The point is; If you aren't sitting at the pointy end, you may have a very important job but, it just dosen't have the status of the pilots.

Anybody who tells you different is trying to advance thier own job/position or trying to fill slots that are less than desireable.

The only reason to look at any position other than pilot in a military aircraft can be stated this way.

1. Physical disability. ie. eyesight or other nonqualiying condition

2. Education, no degreee = enlisted = non pilot duty. In this case you get a job as a Boom Operator or loadmaster or
flight Engineer if required on the A/C.

3. A strong desire to be treated as a 2nd class citizen amoungst all other Officers.

It's your choice. Whatever you do, do your best.
