Mig-21

Maintenance + insurance will probably be worth much more than the actual airframe itself. Would be pretty cool though to fly around in a MiG. Also, no hot ejection seats = no deal for me. :)

There is a guy on PPW that just bought a Mig-21. Supposedly it has something like less than 60 minutes worth of go juice before your a glider!

The MiG-21 is cool and everything, but what I really want is that Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker" I saw for sale a few months ago. It's a company in Illinois, and they have two of them, both of which were for sale IIRC.

:) You have none now, yet you still fly don't you?

Eh, I wouldn't insure it at that price. If you can get one that cheap, I'm sure there are many more around for a similar price. Might need to figure out a way to set up an oil well & refinery in yard though.

I'd fly it if someone else were paying, but owning, definitely not. Those motors were intended to be replaced at regular intervals, rather than being overhauled (at least at the depot level). I'm guessing that most of the folks who have any business flying a MIG don't have the spare $$$ laying around to fund it......hence the airshow useage.

With those jets, feeding them, maintaining them, and insuring them is FAR GREATER cost than the initial buy-in to own them.

You don't want an ejection seat on your MiG because the FAA says you have to have Russian approved maintenance and inspections according to all the Russian maintenance manuals / directives and then a few more hassles. Just get a airframe parachute like a Cirrus owner, pull the chute!!

Personally, speaking as someone with limited assets and no responsibilities like children why would I get insurance at all? Hull insurance is going to be more than the hull is worth, or close, and liability insurance? Do I expect so survive a crash? If not, then why do I care how insolvent my estate becomes? I do not think there is an equivilent must carry liability insurance on airplanes that all states have for automobiles, after all...

You can go hybrid to ease the maintenance :)

I'm tempted to purchase this as a lawn ornament, only to piss off my neighbor who won't stop working on his redneck truck in the middle of his driveway...

The occasional runup would be in order when I'm coming off mids at 6AM

This. What's the fuel burn on this thing, because that and MX are the only things I'd be worried about. No way in hell would I even try to carry insurance on this part 91.

I [obviously] can't afford it, but I hope some rich bastard keeps it flying. No offense to any L-39 drivers around here, but this thing is much more entertaining to see roaring around at an airshow.
