Microsoft Flight Simulator X

I find that I often spend more on a custom built computer (built by me) than what I would have spent for a comparable "off the shelf" system. However, for the extra money, I get EXACTLY what I want, and high quality components. That is the advantage for me.

I agree. Lloyd, what do you say sir?

...Turn on the real-world weather, and make a "trip". then, simply fly it! You don't need MS to do that for you!

Are you using MSFS 2002? When i goto the Weather screen and try to download the Real-World Weather, it says it can't connect to the server...or something to that affect. Is there a patch for this or has MS dicontinued providing weather for MSFS2002?

I had the same problem, disabling my norton firewall and disabling the windows firewall did the trick.

I have it. They are both limited by the cheap joystick & rudder pedals that 99% of users have. Each works pretty well for instrument prep, but besides that unless you have a few grand in special hardware the rest is just a game. BTW there is no reason Microsoft could not pursue FAA approval, but they realize there is not much point. How many actual FAA certified X-Plane systems are there in use? Unless you have all of the equipment using X-Plane is no more certified than FS9.

yes i understand my home system is not FAA approved but still....do you honestly think you could design and test the white knight/spaceshipone with msfs and get anywhere REMOTELY NEAR accurate flight models? doubtful.

(btw, scaled composites uses x-plane to test/model their aircraft)

Well, if you're getting higher quality components, then it's not really "comparable", is it??:)

I should have qualified it, however, and said that you can get alot MORE machine for the same amount when you build it yourself.

X-Plane is dandy as is MSFS. Take your pick. Both are great for sipping a beer and crashing stuff!

Absolutly it's comparable. Same processor, motherboard capabilities, amount, speed and type of memory, chip and memory on video card, etc.

I could get a P4 2.8 Ghz, 256MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, 16x DVD drive, 17 inch analog flat panel monitor, sound card, modem, keyboard, mouse, and $200 worth of software for $600 from Dell. I would be hard pressed to build an equivilant system myself for the same cost, even using the cheapest components.

I don't think it pays to build your own when looking at low end systems, but for high end stuff it is more than worth it.

Also just because the parts have the same numbers does not mean the components compare. That is like comparing a crappy car with a high-end car. The both have 4 tires, 300hp, 2 seats, and have a similar top speed, but that leaves out a lot. Most often the components that go into an average Dell are pretty low end and they don’t compare to good brand name parts even if they have the same basic specs.

MOBO=$45.99

Case=$28.99

Memory=$15.61 x 2 = $31.22

Hard Drive=$74.50

CPU=$188

DVD Burner=$38.99

Monitor=$189.99

Total=$597.68

Now, I didn't use any cheapo Dell parts, and didn't shop around for better prices. I could go up or down on any of them!!

The only thing missing is the software. As far as I can tell, this Dell Model only has Corel WordPerfect, an Anti Virus program and Windows. Windows XP home Upgrade is like $80.

Not a bad deal if you ask me!!

YMMV . . .

What are you talking about? Man, my Kia is quite pimpalicious!!:rawk:

Regardless of how realistic the simulator is, i'll be purchasing X without a doubt. I've been a loyal fan of MSFS for some time now and have been eagerly awaiting this unveiling.

That's exactly what Bill is counting on.:)

I am betting its going to be more of the same; eye candy.

and even worse framerates.

(making me want to build a new $1000 beast that will stomp anything retail)

What is the deal with MSFS and it freezing? It will freeze on some computers almost every 20 mins.....anyone know any fixes to this?

How much RAM do you have?

Same here. I've been building my one machines for almost 10 years now and I would never go back unless it was one helluva deal. I use X-Plane 8.20. The new global scenery is amazing!!

Don't get me wrong, I like eye candy but Flightsim needs to really try to make it "as real as it gets." There is an army of engineers and programers working on the sim and yet Austin M and team X-Plane (no more than 4 people) come out ahead in almost every department. Something is wrong there...
